A truly great player and obviously that includes Moore, can make players around him better.....Hansen made better players of Glenn Hysen and Gary Ablett (r.i.p) so much so that we won the league in 1990. It was only when Hansen packed in that you noticed the deficiencies in those two, hence we've never won a league title since

Despite his prowess at centre half 2 memories stick out for me re Hansen, none of which relate to his performances on the pitch.

1. As a kid I watched match of the day when LFC drew 2-2 with the mancs in fa cup semi late 70's, ('79, google is ace).  Hansen was interviewed after the game and was asked his opinion of the upcoming replay; "we'll beat them easy" was his confident response.  We lost 1-0.

2. I went to the Hillsborough charity game in 2013/14 at Anfield which I think was on the Monday prior to us playing Chelsea in that infamous match.  Hansen was giving a bit of a speech on the mic and basically, regarding LFC going for the league, shouted "we're gonna win it in style".  I immediately recalled the occasion of 35years previously when he'd put the old foot in the gob before the manc semi replay.  Unfortunately for him & us history repeated itself.

Great player though.

in fairness he didnt just say that at anfield he also said it on football focus and I think it was martin keown beside him with eyebrows raised to the ceiling. I think he d have loved to have gone out from motd with us winning the league at the end of that season but instead he wrote another clanger alongside you ll never win anything with kids.

Lawrenson was a fantastic player after Hansen he is probably our best ever centre half ,.What also made him so good is that he could play anywhere across the back four and anywhere across the midfield......and didn't look out of place.

Fuck you could probably have thrown him upfront if you were desperate.....but I guess that's a modern tactic.

Not sure where all that spare skin he seems to have developed over the years came from mind

Lawrenson did have a period of shear class, but Hansen was tried and tested over a far longer period. Hansen was as quick as a flash and one of the very few central defenders in the world, who often broke up an attack in his own area, carried the ball deep into the opponents half and either set up a goal or got on the end of it and bagged a screamer.

He underachieved for Scotland, as he gave away a howler  and was never forgiven.

I know he's not flavour of the month at the moment but where does Lawrenson come into this debate? Its a bit before my time but i've heard a good few reds say for a few years Lawrenson was our best ever CB.

Hansen was a better CB but Lawrenson was a brilliant utility player as he played right across the back four and midfield line too. In the way Souness was a great player and shit manager Lawrenson is the same except replace 'manager' with 'pundit.'

People too quick to diminish Lawrenson as a footballer based on how much of a tool he became after he stopped playing. Between 82-86 it's debatable whether there was a better central defensive partnership in the world, than Jocky and Lawrenson.

The difference is that Jocky made everything look so easy.

lawrenson played centre mid for Ireland. scored a very important goal on the way to euro 88 but he always seemed to be injured.

that quote from tony ma about hansen going mad in dortmund and lawro sitting there looking embarrassed us an image thst has always stuck with me.

I always thought he was more of a preston fan than liverpool and was surprised to see him refer to us as wei his column in the echo.

he was posing with the s*n last week though pleaded it was thrust at him and pic taken before he knew what was going on.

in short I dont trust him.

Lawrenson was a brilliant Centre half. Our younger fans wont know, and will judge him is as he is on the telly, but trust me he was very good.

Hansen was the classier of the two but what a pairing they were and you only realise as you get older how good.

I remember a few years ago at the Hillsborough charity game Kenny organised. Lawro Chested a corner down stone dead in front of his foot, I just sat there in awe thinking ' You don't lose it'.
