From Liverpool originally, Netherley. Then family moved to Oxford for work reasons when I was still at school. Lived in Italy for a year. Couple of years travelling around in my 20s. Birmingham for 8 years. Now back near Oxford which is a nice city but horrendously expensive and full of posh people wearing mustard trousers. I think everywhere has good and bad aspects. To define a place as crap though I think the key factors are the inhabitants, ugliness, risk of unpredictable violence and also a lack of amenities and good food, watering holes etc.

Unpredictable violence and a lack of amenities pretty much defines the whole of Northern England. And largely because of the cunt CD mentioned a few posts ago. Lads and girls who would be working in industry and partying of a weekend are reduced to call centres, unemployed, long term illness or taking and/or dealing drugs. The Tory Utopia.

Amazed to see so many Widnes shouts in here without mentioning the ‘Corn

I’m in Runcorn new town right now. And I’ve got a hangover. Not the best combination.

Gonna eat some bacon and fuck off to Walton Gardens.

Home to arguably the finest bridge in the world.

Oh come on, apart from a small area round the village it’s like Watts during the riots.

One of the hottest girls I ever met was from Castleford. Supermodel till she opened her mouth. Imagine Jessica Alba mouthing sausage dinner during sex.

Actually….

And when you've finished fucking off, you can fuck off again!

Having worked in Bolton around the turn of the last decade, I've never been back. It was a horrendous place.

The very centre had

some lovely buildings but mismanagement of the outer part of the town centre meant most of it was empty.

It's got serious small man syndrome and, like an Evertonian, defines itself by what it's not rather than what it is - i.e it's not Manchester.

It tried to fashion itself on Manchester when redeveloping, such as building city centre apartments, student digs, shopping' malls and out of town retail parks, but doesn't have the draw of a city so they were all largely empty.

When you'd walk past some of the bar areas at lunchtime there'd be people stood outside half pissed, like the very worst sights of the Matthew street festival, but at like 1pm on an average Wednesday.

The town had serious racial schisms too, with people seemingly largely siloed into their own communities. Local politics was divided on those lines too. I wasn't surprised at all to see that UKIP got their first council foothold there.

Before I went to work there I'd heard tell (largely by my mum to be fair) that the 'people were lovely', but I saw no evidence of that, quite the opposite.

Before I worked in Bolton I used to slag Liverpool off, not after that. Sat on the steps by Liverpool One looking out onto the docks in the sunshine, eating an ice cream and with no BNP stalls in sight. Meant for a fine life, just a fine life.

George R R Martin apparently visited England to research the War of the Roses before writing Game of Thrones, absolutely no coincidence at all that the biggest cunts in it are the Boltons.

Someone mentioned Wythenshawe earlier in the thread and I concur. Never seen anything like it and I've been to Wigan. It's like a wasteland, shocks me every time I pass through.

Had the “pleasure” of working there for the last 20 years. I’m that fed up of working from home, I’m actually looking forward to going back there!!!

We were at the fair in Morecambe one day and a guy looking worse for wear made a beeline for me. Being the nice chap I am I took out a one pound coin to offer him. Unfortunately he was only looking for directions and was extremely miffed that I had assumed he was homeless.

Ever been to Methil Mook? Heard it’s a proper crap hole.

always fancied going, just to see for myself

I have and it is a serious shithole. Same goes for all those old mining towns in Fife.

I would say Kelty is possibly worse.

Was in Rhyl the other week. Jesus I felt like there was a giant black cloud over my head. Saw a young fella pushing a pram with about five young kids in his wake all fighting and shouting. He genuinely looked dead inside. People actually go on holiday there. I’m not sneering at this because it’s all some people can afford, it just depresses me.
