Free? A British train ticket?

There used to be some weird thing you could do on trains where you pay 5p at at train station machine and you get a ticket. If asked for a ticket while on the train you present what you have paid for and sometimes the ticket officer would look at it and pass it back - on with your journey. Others would say this is only a ticket to board a train. Once you arrive at your destination you have to pay for your ticket, as they knew most people didn't pay they would get you to pay there. But more often than not your train journey would cost 5p and the gates at the other end would be open. Not free, but not far away.

Don't remember that, but when I was a lad I used to live not far from Anfield and they used to open the gates about 20 minutes before the final whistle ( presumably a legal thing ) and we used to wander in for free.

I remember that. But you wouldn’t have got that on merseyrail.

it was the Permit for travel system, which I only really encountered when I left Liverpool to go to Uni. It was on British rail stations without any manned office or when the ticket office was closed.

You had to but a permit to travel in lieu of buying a ticket. Smallest denomination it allowed you to buy was 5p. You were expected to cash it in for ticket at the earliest opportunity, either inspector on the the train or destination. Obvs I’d no one was there at the end whatchagoado?

You also had to blag you had no other change if collared.

Not that I’d do that, you understand
