Not really a song but bloody brilliant non the less

It is, pretty much anything he's ever done is class.  His poem 'The Ritz' cracks me up because I used to go in the club that it's about, albeit on student night on Monday which was a rock/alternative night rather than grab-a-granny night which is the one the poem is about.  The original Tracy Barlow off Corrie used to be in there some Monday nights E'd off her face, good times.  It had a tunnel that ran under the dancefloor linking the bogs on both sides and on Mondays it used to be completely filled with people making out and smoking weed, proper fall of Rome scenes.  Used to be in there until 2am, get home about 3.30am and be up for work at 7.30 fresh as a daisy, oh to be 19 again.

Anyway fuck the history lesson.  This is one of my favourite songs ever, heartbreakingly beautiful.

Also this.

I went through the typical young man's musical cycle with Guns n Roses, first I thought they were great, then I got into Nirvana and stuff like that and thought GnR were so fucking shit, now I look back and realise that they were in fact a fucking amazing rock band and I was right all along.  I saw them at Maine Road in 1992 as part of probably the best gig I've ever been to (support was Faith No More and the other band on the bill was some cunts with a weird sound dubbed 'grunge' - Soundgarden they were called..) and they were absolutely amazing live, tight as fuck.

I was at Donnington in 1988 to see GnR (Adler, Duff, Izzy, Slash and Axl). That gig was captured as the black and white segments of the Paradise City video.

I scaffold rig collapsed that day and killed 2 people in front of the stage.

I can picture that exact part of the video, didn't know that about it though.  Gutted I never got to see the original lineup, Adler had left by the time I saw them which was no loss really in my opinion but so had Izzy and that was.  I console myself with having seen Faith No More twice including Jim Martin's last ever gig with them.

Edit - I know I've posted it so many times before but this one.  It was about 10,000 times as epic (lol) as this clip makes it look, and this looks pretty epic.  I was off my fucking face on speed, acid, weed and beer, which helped:

Yeh love FNM. Saw them first time at the old Riverside in Newcastle with Chuck Mosely on vocals.

Big Jim's been playing some gigs with Infectious Grooves. Cool as fuck.

I'm not sure the world is ready for that much cool.

I never saw them with Chuck - half of me thinks I would have liked to but the other half of me thinks that really I probably didn't miss much.  Some of the songs they wrote back then were great; the obvious We Care A Lot, As The Worm Turns etc, but he really was an appalling excuse for a singer at least compared to Patton.

That Sick Of It All Clip is class.

Oh, no doubt mate, Patton is fantastic. His stuff with Peeping Tom, Tomohawk, and Fantomas is frequently incredible I think.

That first FNM album had some great stuff on it though; Faster Disco and (especially) RnR being two of my favourite ever FNM songs.

Patton is so prolific it's hard keeping up with him and I love that virtually everything he does seems to be in a different genre.  You think you've got him sussed and then he throws some shit like this out:

or a live Twin Peaks soundtrack cover:

and you're just like 'fuck's sake Mike be less mercurial please, I can't keep up.'

...and yeah those freaks are definitely here to party.

Edit: He actually looks worryingly like Bobby Peru at times in that Fantomas live clip.  Scenes.

As cheesy as a bath full of philadelphia but it should be the introductory lecture for rock ballads 101, a truly genre-defining masterpiece:

I can remember dancing like a twat to this (specifically the running on the spot dance) with my shirt off at G-Mex in 1997.  This was in front on my mate's mam (prodigy gig in her mid 40s, top bird) whilst off my face on speed and acid, because hey, why pay for shit Es when you can DIY and be certain.

First time I saw them was at the Tivoli in Dublin in 1993 just before the Jilted album was released so most of the stuff they played was from the Experience album apart from 'One love' which I think happened to be the first time they played it on stage. Made all the better as I was just coming up when it came on. The fucking place went mental.  Brilliant gig and to top it off before the gig started met Keith and Leroy who were just walking around chatting to people.  Top blokes the pair of them.

"I used to treat you like a lady...now you're a substitute teacher" has just cracked me up.  Excellent.

As for the stuff on Patton's versatility, I'll always love this song as it just brings a smile to my face and reminds me of a certain point in life surrounded by great people.

Aside from that though, seriously, who else could have his body of work in terms of different influences, styles and successes, and be pulling songs like this out in German, just to amuse themselves, but doing it so perfectly?

As if to underline that point further, it was included as a fellow B-side with a cover of Spanish Eyes.

He's playing the Apollo in Manchester on 21 March, I'm considering it - I first heard him back when I was at school and he's still going strong.  His tour dates this year are hilarious and show the surprising breadth of his popularity:

April 30 - Las Vegas, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

May 7 - New York, Williamsberg Music Hall

June 24 - Tiverton Community Arts Centre
