‘Riders’ is just a perfect rock piece. Morrison’s vocal is arguably one of the greatest rock vocals ever put to tape. The things that you find out - I had no idea, but there it is - the dark, eerie whisper in the second vocal track. Fucking brilliant, and it nails the atmosphere. Put a good pair of headphones on for this.

What makes this song great?

 

A breakdown of Jimi Hendrix’s Dylan cover  ‘All Along The Watchtower’. Dylan himself has said that ‘it overwhelmed me upon first hearing’, and ‘Jimi, it’s your song- I just wrote it’.  For the ‘Electric Ladyland’ sessions Noel Redding apparently got so impatiently pissed off, that he spent most of the time at the pub. Most of the bass on the album is played by Jimi, including ‘Watchtower’. 
 

Jimi was kicking around and jamming with Dave Mason at this time, and invited Dave to join the Experience as their new bass player. Dave declined. The surprise on watchtower, is that the rhythm guitar is a joint effort with Dave on acoustic 12 string, and Jimi on acoustic 6 string, strumming together to get the rich tone.

 

The original backing was recorded on 4 track, and then transferred for more overdubs. Dave Mason turns up again with a chorus backing vocal on ‘Crosstown Traffic’ Also of note, a very drunk and stoned Brian Jones gains consciousness enough to play the iconic ‘Vibraslap’ part.
