I'm going to 3 gatherings this weekend, a BBQ at a friends house for the neighbours tomorrow, a bonfire and BBQ Saturday night and cream tea (jam first) Sunday afternoon by the boating lake listening to the local brass band. I think it will be a most enjoyable few days.

I remember reading a thing about the language people use to describe their pets, and it often being a narcissistic form of self-praise. It reflects what they'd like to think of themselves. My dog's so smart, cat is fearless etc.

 

I think that's how middle England regards the Queen. Rather than seeing a mundane figurehead, they instead imbue her with all the qualities they'd like to feel they embody. For a generation or two that has benefitted from a rise in living standards, low house prices when they jumped on the ladder and guaranteed pensions, it just feeds into the feeling of exceptionalism. The Queen works hard. She's not merely fortunate. She works hard. Duty. Tough job. Stoic.

 

Even if you pull the curtain back, some people won't want to see. The fantasy is far more comforting.

 

I hope anyone going to an event enjoys themselves though, it's been a shit couple of years.
