Global Warming

Yeah basically global warming is bollocks. As we speak I am going around my house turning all the lights on and I've just been outside and started my car. I'm going to leave it running over night. I am thinking about starting smoking again and I am deffo keeping my coal fire now.

I've found some solar panels round the back that should make good firewood.

It did debunk so many arguments for global warming.

I'm a bit pissed now as I'm trying to drown a cold, so probably not the best time to type a thesis on it. But with that said the one point that I remained unconvinced about was the motive, or maybe the momentum for the theory becomming widely regarded fact.

I did mention to a mate of mine who is equally sceptical of the media agenda the other week that I couldn't figure out the score on global warming. I didn't understand how it was getting so much media attention when you consider the oil lobby etc. The argument about reducing the development speed of developing countries is an interesting one indeed.

I'm not sure I can buy into what was basically explained away as a snowball effect though. Someone comes up with theory - it's convenient for someone in power to support it - massive industry blooms - perpetual movement! Not sure, it sounds to perfect.

Anyway yeah... I'm going to check my house for polar bears and go to bed now (with all the lights on). Sweet dreams all.

This thread: Oh dear.

To be honest, I blame Channel 4 for being irresponsible enough to show this, although people really ought to use that thing between their ears a bit more often too. Global warming has been proven so conclusively to be anthropogenic that anyone even debating it looks like an idiot. Let's just say that if you believed 9/11 was perpetrated by the US government, then believing that we are all being lied to about Global Warming is one whole extra order of nuttiness.

I lack the time or the will to make a proper post in this thread, as my body grows weary of arguing with Holocau... er, I mean, Global Warming Deniers on the Internet, so I will leave you with:

(1) Observer article about the C4 show in question

(2) ukwatch.net article about the C4 show in question

(3) Monbiot's article from January about the show

You'll have to do better than those links which merely knock the messengers rather than demolish the message.

Leaving aside the weak conspiracy stuff, the central thesis is that the rise in CO2 follows as a consequence of global warming rather than causes it.Has that been properly debunked?

Global Warming = Oil is running out

if we were told not to use oil, we would use twice as much.

This has the effect without the reaction IMHO

When they find a replacement for the petrol driven car and the oil fired Power station that allows them to make money out of the new found fuel then like magic no globle warming anymore

if you had said to me, we would be recycling most of the contents of are bins 15 years ago, i would have said never but we now have a bin for rubbish, a bin for green waste, a box for paper, a box for glass, a box for tin cans, and now they are even bugging your bin is it to save the Planet errrrrrrrrr

No in a word

The council have realised that they can make large amounts of cash out of this shit and they dont even have to wade through it now

Sell the paper to the paper mill = £

Sell the glass to the glass makers = £

Sell the tin cans back to the makers = £

even sell the green waste back to us as compost via the garden centres = £

and now they are looking at going to a fortnightly service

and will you see any of this money will you shite they will start to charge you for doing all of this in a couple of years time so you will be hit twice

How fucking clever are these people

i recon there is a Polar bear in charge of this recyceling shit

What, so debunking the director of the documentary as a sensationalist anti-environmentalist who ignores facts to progress his bias, is 'weak conspiracy stuff'?! Riiight. (I do agree with his pro-GM stance though, the studies against that were generally bollocks).

As a visit to http://www.bollockyboo.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1706&start=15 may profess, I (a) know a bit about this climate change stuff (albeit not nearly enough anymore) and (b) was willing to listen to the theory of a solar-based influence upon global warming, but the more I read about this, the more it appears to be agenda-driven misinformation.

No - I thought some of the documentary conspiracy allegations were weak.

haha you obviously didn't watch it because it mentioned how ridiculous it was to compare holocaust revisionism with questionning the science in the theory of global warming. Big Ig has posted some links on the bollockyboo thread which I'll read before commenting further.

It's tricky this though because at then end of the day as a layman you simply have to take the word of scientists and last night showed beyond doubt how modelling and forecasting can be innacurate and also easily manipulated.

Aye but why would it be manipulated? I can understand scientists who are closely allied to big biz or to governments having possible biases or being open to manipulation, but most academics aren't like that at all... And you won't generally get published in the main scientific journals if your papers aren't up to scratch and unbiased, seeing as they're peer-reviewed by your own peers, peers often chosen for their differing or even opposing viewpoints.

Was reading the Times Magazine last night, about some scientist who went off on one big-time and researched and read every single last bit of research there was out there about climate change, including a shitload on palaeoclimatology (understand the past, predict the future), and who's just written a book on his findings, based on papers that predict a 1 degree change, and what will happen, all the way up to 6 degrees. Judging by the article, it's fucking frightening, and he (who rather than focusing on one aspect, CO2, has read about and covered every last angle on climate change) is convinced we're the trigger that's setting off the vicious circle into, well, hell basically. I'll try and scan in the article if I remember, even though it's a bit shallow seeing as it's the Times Mag. But (while STILL having not actually seen this doc.) I'd sooner believe a full-blown scientist who's done that depth of research and come up with that conclusion, over a controversy-loving layman documentary maker and the spattering of scientists he's gathered together under the umbrella of his cause*

*May still change my mind having watched it, will also try not to be too pessimistic!

Mr Big Ig, are you saying you would rather trust a scientist over scientists?

Well, yeah, seeing as he's compiled the research of about 10,000 scientists into one book, aye! Although I see your point - if he's irrevocably biased my whole argument's fucked. Didn't come across that way at all though.

If global warming goes as predicted, the gulf stream will fail and we'll experience Nunavut-style winters... We are at roughly similar latitudes, after all. New York State had 6 feet of snow in fuck all time this winter, and they're at the same latitude as Spain - all that keeps Europe warm is the Gulf Stream - hot air and water circulation from the Carribbean

That will increase the problem because I'll fucking definitely be going abroad for my holidays then.

I didn't see the programme but I understand that it layed the cause at the door of solar flares. What I have seen is that a number of the scientists quoted in the programme have said their comments were taken out of context, and one appeared on Newsnight last night and turned out to specialise in diseases, not climatology. From what I gather, the more rational voices say that although flares do cause a warming of the atmosphere, the actions of man have exacerbated that to a degree where we are on the verge of a very serious shift in climate that will lead to more extreme temperatures, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.
