I like South Africa. And I hated those people who wouldn't trade with you in the 80’s. I carried on buying your tomatoes all through that period. You say tomato, I say tom-ay-to. You say to-mar-toe! I say potato, you say po-tay-toe! Let’s call the whole thing a thoroughly nice chap, and it doesn’t matter what race he is.

I watched Scissored Isle last night. I thought it was awful. Yet most people I know and the reviews I read all raved about it. What am I missing?

Somethings changed about modern Partridge. Can't put my finger on what it is. But I wish he'd stopped bringing out new stuff. It's making me question if it was funny first time round. And I don't like thinking that.

Partridge has been done for some time mate, in my view. Not seen the film and shan't be watching this, the old material once in a while is sufficient for me.

I know most creative stuff just has it's day, but I can't help feeling this time much of that's rooted in no longer being able to see anything but Coogan when he's playing him, for me anyway. Partridge's hubris no longer seems separate enough from his own character to be fresh or funny, it's by-numbers and jaded.

He should have been one of the new Top Gear presenters.

In many ways, the fact that he, like gervais, invest so much of themselves in their best characters is actually quite brave. The Trip, for example, lays bare quite a few darker and more unfortunate corners of his own persona. And it's not by accident.

Oh no doubt mate. But then the characters he created, and Partridge in particular, were always knowingly based on facets of his own.

I'll freely admit I'm a right miserable cunt though, and almost always stop liking comedy/comedians after a few series/tours or the like.

I tend to just think the best lines have been used by then and the rest becomes repetitious and forced, but no doubt I miss some stuff I'd like through that attitude.

The Trip is a great example, so many people who's tastes I share have recommended me that programme, but I could only take about five minutes of him playing Steve Coogan and left it.

I feel sorry for my girlfriend.
