For some reason, I make and prefer it quite "brothy" and have it cream-free... and your in-laws would hang me, but I have to admit to putting just a dash of smoked paprika in with all the sweet.

Not entirely sure what you mean but it's almost single cream the fat content is so high. Gloriously creamy, I just want to dunk biscuits in it all day and put on about 4 stone

Sorry, missed this post, Pesti.

 

4 cups of plain flour, one egg, around two-thirds of a cup of milk and around two-thirds of a cup of water - maybe a little more water, if necessary.  My Subotica Godmother's recipe, circa 1973.

 

I've heard some people boil them separately, and add them to the pot cooked, but I was taught to drop them straight into the furiously boiling pakrikás and cook them there and then.

 

By the way, I tried some sour cream in it the other day - I must say, very nice.
