Desert Island Discs

Can't believe I'm posting a music thread as I usually find them tedious, but try everything several times is a motto I've just come up with (needs some work). You get a luxury also I believe. Never listened to an episode in full so I'll leave it for others to fill out the details

Can the book be a survival guide or is that missing the point?

sorry shouldn't have said survival. Practical is the word i think. Neither the book or the luxury should be of any practial use to aid escape or communication with the outside world. You have an endless supply of fresh food and water so you will live its just that you're stuck on this desert island forever with no prospect of escape. phones, boats, wi-fi laptops all banned. that sort of thing. if you like carpentry you coudl have a saw as long as it was for making nice objects and not for making a boat.

see no reason why you can't read a survival guide if yo want as you're gonna survive anyway.

this is getting complicated. off you go.

and reasons for everything are needed - not just a list.

ps (oh and you get the bible and the complete works of shakespeare anyway so no need to pick either as your book).

This is a thinking thread. I can't think today. I suppose we can "think out loud" with the Don's permission.

Are you only allowed six songs or can you have six LPs?

I'd have to have something to do with LFC in my six songs, perhaps that Elvis version of YNWA. If it's albums we're allowed then it would be an album with that on probably.

For my book I think I'd pick the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, preferably one of the versions which has all books under one cover.

Need to think about the rest.

Its only 6 (or 8) songs not albums.

Politicians normally adopt the following basic formula

1. English classical piece to stir feelings of national pride.

2. Somethign by the Beatles

3. Another piece of classical to continue the culture vulture vibe.

4. bit of opera with some sob story of their own attached to it.

5. someting young eclectic and unexpected eg G Brown and his Arctic Monkeys

6. something soppy that reminds them of wife / kids etc

book - something long and worthy - "never had the time ot read it until now but alwasy meant to"

luxury - toe nail clippers quite popular.

I thought it was 1 album and 8 singles. So far no-one has done it though, including me!

is right. Just looked radio 4 website.

Its:

8 peicesof music/songs

1 album

1 book (you're already provided with bible and shakespeare)

1 luxury (which can't be used to communicate with outside world or escape).

and away you go castaways . . . . . .

I'll give it a go as it's a good little idea.

Ok Computer; greatest album of all time in my humble opinion so it would make sense to take that (presuming I can't burn my own album and cheat).

Jackie Wilson - Your love's lifting me higher

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye or Hallelujah can't decide.

Air - All I need

Barber's Adagio for strings

Queens of the stone age - No one knows

Stones - Gimme Shelter

Marvin - Heard it through the grapevine

How on earth do you pick your last song.....??? Possibly something by Bloc Party. Helicopters or Positive Tension

Book - Sooooo hard. Possibly some sort of Pornographic compendium.

Luxury - A guitar. I don't play but I soon would.

John Cooper Clarke was great last week.

He was brilliant.

I love the fact it opens my mind to so many people I’d have never even thought of listening to. Think the only person I’ve not listened to for ages was Beckham as I had zero interest in him.

Was surprised how well Mickey Flanagan came across and Monica McWilliams brought me to tears.
