What's the catch though? They must have to do more than just register, or I could just get the whole forum to register and collect 30,000 doallars! Surely they have to put money into an account with them or something?

For the mostpart (through affiliate networks) the commission is based in a CPA - i.e. someone registers and then deposits £x - if you log-in to buy.at, and click on "affiliate" at the top, you can link to individual retailers, and get appropriate banners. The only casino iirc. is Hard Rock casino, which doesn't pay a massive amount - there are a plethora of other affiliate networks* though, that offer all sorts of advertisers.

I understand that you don't want to advertise to the extent of certain other sites (that swamp you with pop-ups and adult dating), but for example from OnlineMediaGroup you can promote the LFC credit card, and get paid whenever anyone signs up for one. Might be worth a look.

*Other affiliate network directories are available etc.

This place keeps me sane (almost, well okay, not very).

If the only footie info and chat I had was the ignorant musings of local Wols and Blunts I'd go mad.

If you're looking for about £85 a month Dave is there a facility for sending you say, £2.50, £5, £10 a month? I used to do this with a well known charity but they just spent my tenner on sending me junk mail and phoning me up begging for more. You'll not do that will you?

You can set Paypal up to do this - it's one of the options we've used on RAWK for about a year and seems to work well. Allows people to choose the freuqency and amount.

I'll look into that. I haven't used that function before, but I'm sure it will straightforward enough.

Christ! Does the person you refer have to deposit some money?

Yeah they have to play for real money once they register but with the growing rise of people playing poker im sure it would be possible to get a few people registered and get a few $$$s

Dave,

I'll obviously help out before your launch date however I would strongly suggest you make it membership only and all those who have made a contribution will deemed to have paid there membership fees, then people like Momo will know that it will cost them money to abuse the rest of us, some people might even pay you to ban certain posters ;)

There's pro's and cons for that though Nick. Of course, if everyone paid £1 membership fee the forum would pay for itself, but then it would no longer be a 'free' site.

I don't really want to go down that road, even if it would probably rid us of the Momo's of this world. I just don't like the idea of the site not being open to all. Other sites don't do that, so I don't want to do it either even though I can see where you're coming from.

Also, I like you and wouldn't want to take money from people to ban you ;-)

On another question, do the 85 quid a month cover everything, or do you also need to cover the cost of s/w and h/w + infrastructure separately?

85 a month is for the server. We have the forum software on a permanent license, but if I want to update to a more recent version of v-bulletin I would have to pay for that, although it is not very expensive I believe. Something like £30 a year or something if my memory is correct.

Is this hosted by an ISP, which takes care of all the backup, line rental etc?

Don't know if you remember Dave, but last year I emailed you with a suggestion about subscriptions to the forum. I suggested that people could register for an initial period, say three or six months, without paying. Then after that, if they liked the place enough and wanted to carry on posting, they could pay a quid a month.

I understand you want to keep the place open to everyone, but if someone still wants to carry on posting on the site after six months then I don't think it would be exclusionary to charge them, provided you let them know the score when they register. Besides, people can still carry on reading the forums if they don't want to pay subs, as you don't have to be registered to do that. I dare say there are plenty of people who get lots of enjoyment from reading without ever posting, I did for a long time.

Also, if the total subs exceeded the running costs of the forum (which they probably would as I'm sure there are more than 85 people who'd pay) you could always give the profits to the HJC. No-one would complain about that, and many would say that this site losing its status as being open to all would be a price worth paying if you did that. It might even encourage people to pay subs who wouldn't otherwise.

Don't know if any of this would work, but maybe something to consider as a last resort if all else fails?

I'll send you a cheque towards running costs, as I've never seemed to be able to get Paypal to work. I sent one last year but Haje never gave me a tick – I never mentioned it as I don't like to talk about my work for charidee, but now I've decided I don't want people thinking I'm a tight arse!
