I'd go for Souness before Gerrard.Souness wasn't capable of hitting the heights of Gerrard but he was far more consistent and as a leader of men there is just no comparison.

The argument would be a nonsense anyway as had Souey or Smithy been on the pitch Lampard wouldn't have dared even raise his voice.

Gerrard as a footballer is better than Souness,

 

He's overrated, tactically poor, not a great captain, has lost the bite he once had and his main attribute is a good engine.

 

In football terms Xabi is the current midfielder I'd hate to lose. Part of me wishes we'd taken Chelsea's money and gone and bought two classy wingers.

Souness was to us what Keane has been to the Mancs over the last ten years - a leader and a player that you would choose to have in your team every time, ahead of pretty much anyone else. Gerrard, though technically more accomplished (just), has never quite reached that level of consistency and influence. That's why I would choose Souness ahead of Gerrard every time in my all-time LFC 11.

I can't see how Gerrard comes even close to Souness as a player. I think the argument about playing in a better team begins to become less persuasive when Gerrard's international performances are taken into account. I have never seen him dominate an England game the way he can a Liverpool one, and that is in a side laden with talent. He produces cameos of what he can do, but has not yet come close to replicating his club form on that stage.

 

I'm with Cochaer in that I wish we'd cashed in and reinvested the money on our flanks. I don't think he'll still be here in two years time and I doubt his market value will ever be higher than it was this summer. Furthermore, heretic that I am, I think his lack of tactical discipline is one of our biggest problems sometimes. Other players feel they have to sit back and let him charge around all over the show, and therefore our ability to attack and defend as a unit is compromised.

 

He's an extremely talented player, but can't touch Souness. I wonder if he ever will either. He is all about instinct - and that betrays him on occasions. Souness had the brain to match his talent and Gerrard doesn't.
