Israel - A Rant

I agree re the detachment from humanity, but I'd argue that sitting in an office somewhere then pressing a button to blow someone up also shows a, albeit different type of, detachment from humanity. Perhaps a detachment from reality first. Dunno.

And I agree re Stronts' questioning. But as the bigger picture is so utterly horrific...you know?

Hmmmmm....

I despise the right wing, nationalistic feckers. But, when Israelis claim that the protesters they murder are all in Hamas, I expect them to provide proof to back up their allegations. In the interests of consistency, I'd be wanting more than an unsourced tweet before I accepted those white phosphorus claims (even if they have previously used it - but it's been used in Iraq etc too) as being true.

Accept your point. It could easily be from any one of the middle east conflicts and published as propaganda.

Although you could argue that knifey bloke brought it on himself, this highlights the total disregard for human life.

Israel/OPT: Six Palestinians killed within 24 hours, some deaths may involve war crimes

19 September 2018, 21:54 UTC

The deaths of six Palestinians within just 24 hours is a horrific demonstration of the unnecessary or excessive force deployed by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), Amnesty International said today.

Between 10pm on Monday 17 September and 8pm on Tuesday 18 September, Israeli forces killed four Palestinian men in the Gaza Strip using live ammunition . Within the same period, two more died as a result of the actions of Israeli forces in the West Bank, one after being beaten during the process of arrest and another shot dead in a busy street in East Jerusalem.

“The shocking fact that five Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli authorities and one died in their custody in just 24 hours is a chilling demonstration of the utter disregard for right to life. Several of these incidents appear to involve deliberate and wilful killing of unarmed civilians and may amount to war crimes,” said Saleh Higazi, Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International.

“It is the fact that such crimes are rarely, if ever, punished that allows unlawful killings and other violations of the right to life to continue in shameless disregard of international law. These incidents are not new in the OPT and are likely to continue unless this cycle of impunity is broken.”

On Monday 17 September two Palestinian men were killed during an Israeli air strike that targeted them on the southern Gaza Strip. Gaza’s health ministry identified them as Naji Jamil Abu Assi, 18, and Alaa Ziyad Abu Assi, 21. The Israeli military has claimed that the men were targeted because they approached the Gaza-Israel boundary fence and placed a “suspicious object” nearby.

Information that Amnesty International collected confirms that the two men were unarmed and that there were no indications that they posed any imminent threat that justified using lethal force against them. The reason for their presence at the site remains unclear.

On Tuesday 18 September, Israeli soldiers shot and killed two other Palestinian men in the Gaza Strip. Gaza’s health ministry identified the men as Mohammad Ahmad Abu Naji, 34, and Ahmad Mohammad Muhsin Omar, 20. They were participating in the ongoing protests against Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip and in support of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, known as the “Great March of Return”, which began in March 2018. Israeli forces shot the two men in the chest with live bullets despite them not posing any immediate or serious threat.

Since 30 March, more than 180 Palestinians, including at least 29 children, have been killed and over 17,000 others injured in the Israeli military response to the “Great March of Return” protests held along the Israel-Gaza fence. Amnesty International has not documented any instances where protesters posed an imminent threat to the lives of Israeli soldiers and snipers, who have been located behind the fence, protected by military equipment, sand hills, drones and military vehicles.

Also on Tuesday, another Palestinian, Mohammed al-Khatib al-Rimawi, 24, died after he was brutally beaten by Israeli forces as they were arresting him at his home in the village of Beit Rima in the West Bank district of Ramallah.

His family told Amnesty International that around 40 Israeli soldiers arrived in a civilian minibus and that 15 of them burst into the family home in a pre-dawn raid on Tuesday, assaulting Mohammad while he was still lying in bed. The Israeli forces severely beat Mohammad and carried him away while unconscious. The family was informed of his death a few hours later, at around 9am, through a phone call from the Palestinian authorities. An autopsy is expected to take place on Thursday 20 September in presence of the victim’s lawyers.

On the same day, another young Palestinian man, Mohammed Yousef Sha’aban Elayyan, 26, from Qalandia refugee camp near Jerusalem, was shot dead by Israeli police near the Damascus Gate of the Old City in East Jerusalem. Israeli police alleged that the shooting occurred to prevent a stabbing attempt on the start of the Jewish fasting day of Yom Kippur. No Israelis were reported injured in the incident.

Israeli police issued a statement saying the Palestinian man ran towards a Jewish man near Jerusalem’s Old City and knocked him to the ground, then ran away while waving a sharp object at officers who opened fire on him.

Israeli police released security camera footage that they said showed the incident from multiple angles, including images of Mohammed moving towards the Israeli forces with a sharp object before he was shot dead. It is not clear that the Israeli forces had no choice but to use lethal force.

“Israel has a duty to immediately launch an independent, thorough and transparent investigation into each of these incidents and all other incidents which may involve the use of unnecessary or excessive force, torture and other ill-treatment against Palestinian civilians. We call on the Israeli authorities to hold those found responsible for these grave violations to account through fair trials. Until this happens we will not see an end to Israeli forces’ random and apparently senseless killing and violence,” said Saleh Higazi.

“The international community must also take concrete steps to stop the delivery and trade of arms and military equipment to Israel. A failure to do so fuels serious human rights violations against millions of men, women and children suffering the consequences of 50 years of military occupation, including 11 years of blockade in the Gaza strip.”

The show was sold to numerous countries around the (non-Wheelie) world. However Israel declined to purchase it as a graphic artist mistakenly drew a Star of David instead of a Pentagram on the front of the German-accented spellbook, causing accusations of antisemitism towards the programme's creators.

Maybe not being democratic or subservient enough?

That’s not really a good enough answer, is it. I think, if it happened (and I’ve no reason to believe it didn’t), it is tragic but it’s fair to ask what the circumstances were. If, as has happened before, it’s a sniper using a child as target practice, I think it’s fucking horrific. But something else might have happened. I’m just asking for more information.

Naser ‘Azmi Mohamed Mosbeh (12), from Khan Yunis, was hit with a live bullet to the head in eastern Khan Yunis.

Thanks, appreciated. If that’s to be believed, and it’s just more of the same egregious use of force from Israel, they are continuing to prove themselves a murdering, vicious terrorist state.

This happens, and is tacitly encouraged by their government, because Israelis fundamentally believe that Palestinians are something less than human.  How else could they subjugate an entire population in the way they do?  And why does the West allow it, when we’re supposed to be up in arms if Jews feel they’ve been subjected to an anti Semitic slur?

I can’t even find anything about it. No reports of that name. Then again, I’ve only done a quick search as I’m on the phone.

Here's some more detail.  (Not a fucking word of it on the BBC website, of course.)

What strikes me as peculiarly vile is the half-arsed excuses they use for murdering children.  Apparently, "rioters" threw over 100 bombs and grenades, injuring... nobody.  Fuck off.  If you're going to lie to try to cover up your murderous violence, at least go to the trouble of making up a plausible lie.  Maybe it's just that they know they don't have to.  Israel kills civilians with impunity.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/sep/29/two-children-among-seven-people-shot-dead-by-israel-say-officials

Israeli forces have killed seven Palestinians, two of them children, and shot more than 90 others in one of the bloodiest days of a six-month protest movement along the frontier, the Gaza health ministry said.

The ministry in the Hamas-controlled strip said Nasser Mosabeh, 12, and Mohammed al-Houm, 14, were hit by sniper fire near the perimeter fence that surrounds one side of the 140 sq mile coastal enclave.

Israel’s army said around 20,000 people had gathered at multiple sites along the frontier.

“The rioters sabotaged security infrastructure, attempted to cross the security fence and infiltrate into Israel in several locations and hurled over 100 (improvised explosive devices) and grenades towards IDF troops and the security fence,” the Israel Defence Forces said in a statement on Saturday. It said no IDF injuries were reported.

Troops “responded with riot dispersal means and operated in accordance with standard operating procedures”,the army said. Israeli aircraft also bombed two Hamas positions in response.

Palestinians have protested weekly since 30 March in what they call the “Great March of Return”, demanding that Arabs who fled or were expelled around the time of Israel’s creation in 1948 to be allowed to return to their homes. Demonstrators have also focused on a crippling decade-long Israeli-Egyptian blockade that has trapped much of the strip’s population and devastated its economy.

Israeli attacks have killed more than 190 people, the majority by bullets but also bombings. Children, medics and journalists have been shot, often as they stand far back from the fence. One Israeli soldier has been shot dead.

During the past two weeks, the Hamas-led Friday rallies have grown in size and also moved to evenings and night-time, a move protesters say is to save lives as people can move under the cover of darkness. Piles of tyres have also been burnt to obscure the snipers’s vision.

The international aid group Doctors Without Borders says it had treated more than 2,000 patients with gunshot wounds, 90% of whom were hit in the lower limbs, since the protest began. The youngest patient treated was seven years old, the group said in an email.

Nearly half of those shot had fractures and some injuries included severely splintered bones. “The threat of life-long disabilities for these patients is getting bigger as time goes on,” it said.

Israel says its actions are focused on preventing people from entering its territory and accuses Hamas of using the mass rallies to stage attacks. On Friday, it said several Palestinians had breached the fence but immediately returned.

The World Bank warned on Tuesday that Gaza’s economy is in “freefall”. It cited the blockade as a factor but also economic sanctions from Hamas’s political rival, the Palestinian Authority, and a steep reduction in international aid, particularly from the Trump administration.

It said unemployment was now more than 50%, and higher than 70% among Gaza’s youth.

“A combination of war, isolation, and internal rivalries has left Gaza in a crippling economic state and exacerbated the human distress,” said Marina Wes, the World Bank’s director for the region.

The frontier bloodshed had brought Israel and Hamas close to war, leading this summer to the most severe exchanges of fighting since the 2014 conflict, with Israel using airstrikes while Hamas fired mortar bombs and rockets.

A UN-backed ceasefire effort, mediated by Egypt, appeared to have stalled this month.

I know from friends in the IDF, including a sniper actually (but a SF sniper, not a killing kids at a fence sniper) that they record practically everything. If they were throwing bobs and grenades, it should be pretty easy to prove.

If theyd just just got off of their shift in the beautiful bustling hotel it SD’s avatar, walked through their gold paved streets, and thrown grenades, it should be easy to prove they were shot with good reason, before they scurried back into the paradise.
