Premier League Round Up (Apr 5-7 2025)

I was going to start off this week by thanking Everton for the favour they did us this weekend in taking two points off Arsenal. We need all the help we can get at the moment and there’s every chance we’ll win it because of Arsenal dropping points rather than us winning them. We’re actually in better shape than we were before the weekend, despite losing, as Arsenal’s result means we went from needing 13 points to guarantee the title to only needing 11.

But I’m not going to thank Everton because if we’re being honest, they were shite and didn’t deserve a point. The people we really have to thank are those great bunch of lads over at PGMOL who gifted Everton a penalty at a time when Arsenal were in complete control. That’s never a pen in a million years and I’d be absolutely steaming if that was given against us.

It started well for Arsenal as they took the lead through Trossard. They were comfortable and not looking in any danger whatsoever as the Blues offered very little. No surprise there. They defend well and in numbers, but aside from set-pieces all they have when it comes to attacking play is the ball over the top for Beto to run onto.

Arsenal nullified that and were headed for a routine three points until Lewis-Skelly fell over and Harrison decided he was going to tumble over too and chance his arm at getting a pen. It worked as Darren England fell for it. Shit cunt. The fact he’s still in a job will never sit right with me, he should never have survived the Spurs game last season.

Ndiaye converted the pen and although Arsenal went close to a winner a couple of times, ultimately they dropped two points at a time when they can’t afford to drop any.

It feeds into the Arsenal persecution complex though and to some extent I understand it because we all feel like that when we’ve had what feels like a disproportionate number of big decisions go against us. Arsenal have probably been on the wrong end more than the right end when it comes to the big ones, but I also saw a stat showing how overall they’ve had more subjective calls go in their favour than any other team in the league.

It’s almost like the reverse of us. We’re often on the wrong end of those “death by a thousand cuts” refereeing displays where the foul counts are wildly disproportionate to the balance of the game. Arsenal are on the right end of those, but it’s the high profile calls that people tend to (wrongly) focus on.

They were unfortunate in this game though as that’s just not a penalty. It’s one of those that can be given though if a referee wants to, and it’s not going to get overturned once it has been given. If the ref hadn’t blown there’s no way VAR sends him to the screen for that though as it’s just not a foul. Still, never mind eh?

Arsenal probably won’t care too much anyway as they’ve put most of their eggs in the Champions League basket. Arteta made five changes for the Everton game so he could go full strength against Real Madrid, and no doubt we’ll see a similar situation this weekend when they face Brentford. Hopefully they drop more points to soften the blow when we fail to beat West Ham….

Ok, I’m joking as I fully expect us to beat West Ham as it’s at Anfield and I think the crowd will get us over the line. I wouldn’t bet my house on it though, would you?So yeah, come on Brentford, help a brother out.

Interestingly, this was the last game shown on MOTD. When was the last time Arsenal were last on MOTD? Like us, they’re never the last game on, but once Everton touches you…

Enjoying seeing United suffering is probably the only thing that football fans in this country can all agree on.

I suspect us suffering would also unite opposition fans. But we're not suffering. So it won't. Ha.

True, I do think United are nationally reviled more than we are though. They ruined more childhoods in the 90s than Rolf Harris.
