Gene Hackman

One of my favourite war films is Uncommon Valor with Hackman. It's not got a great reputation but I've loved it since I was a kid. Hackman is a marine colonel who goes back to Laos to find his Vietnam POW son. It does admittedly have a weird vibe - some parts goofy, some parts emotional, but I love it!

For me, best thing about him was that he could make even a character which was not particularly well written come alive, seem real, authentic.

If I were a director, I would always demand we first cast Hackman and Robert Duvall and then look around who else the production needs.

I feel the same about Ana De Armas & Jennifer Lawrence.

Thelma & Louise could have been a very different film.
