It's a tough one and I take on TD's point at being wise after the event. We seemed to be open to letting Gomez leave so you would assume we had a player in mind. In the end we went with this 4 but what I feel has become apparent, is that Quansah doesn't look ready. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with him having to play in a title run in, and like you, think that would be unfair on Quansah as well, to be under that pressure.

I actually forgot we were open to Gomez leaving . As you say we must have had someone in mind and based on our status in January ref fit CBs why did we not follow up? Now I know Gomez was coming back and it is unlucky he broke down again however we trying to win the league and european Cup a bit of extra support would have helped. Not being wise after event you are right they had someone in mind last summer .

I watch so little other football nowadays that I'm pretty sure the game against us was the first time I'd seen him play.

Given the hype around him I was expecting to be a lot more impressed than I was. Thought he just looked a fairly nervous, extremely young centre back. Not a loaded question at all, but what's so good about him?

More so Kerkez  who looks every bit the modern full back than Huijsen who admittedly I’ve not seen much of either. I watched a few YouTube bits in the summer when he was leaving Juve and the Twitter young boy savant Moby was all over him. He looks more Agger than Virgil to me but we’re simply not replacing Virgil and if he does leave the best we can hope for is that they find a way to fix Konate so he can play prolonged periods. That being as unlikely as it is and the fact I can’t see us signing a fullback for £50m odd I don’t see either being signed. Huijsen is too young to lead a Liverpool defence if Virgil goes and Konate has his monthly minor injury and too good to be back up if Virgil stays. I reckon they get Virgil to stay and target Hato as back up cb and left back competition for Robbo.

The Gomez injury is a blow especially as it doesn't look good being the same leg. I'm not sure what we could do in January though as we don't panic buy, and rightly so. Look at Spurs and Kevin Danso for instance.

End of the window we had all our cb's plus an emergency in Endo. People will argue that Gomez or even Konate can't be trusted but that's not how we operate.

Gomez and Konate’s availability issues are pretty detrimental to the balance of the squad. We got lucky last year with Quansah looking so assured but it feels like a step back with him this year. Quality alone we’ve probably got the best group of defenders in the league.

Moby

@Mobyhaque1

Dean Huijsen with £55M release clause sounds too good to pass up this summer.

(Percentile as per fbref) 94% Interceptions 91% blocks 88% clearances 90% progressive carries

Can defend & push the ball up the pitch. Now U21 but played for U16/U17/U18/U19. Speaks Dutch. His father played for Ajax youth.

The issue with Huijsen is he left Juve to be a starter. Would he come here to be one of three for two places?

If we don't extend Van Dijk and decide to start the whole cycle again - lower wage bill, squad age and all that - he's exactly what we'd want though.

That’s the thing. He’d get games but if everyone is fit and firing it’s how many games. If Virgil resigns and continues to be unstoppable then there’s one place next to him and cup games. Maybe they get Virgil signed up and sell Konate for £80m to do some money balling but I’d be a bit gutted given that Konate is low key one of the best defenders in the world.

There really are some question marks over a number of our squad this summer…

Alisson & Keheller - I don’t see them both staying. Very possible they’ll both leave.

Gomez - Like last summer, wouldn’t surprise me if an exit suited all parties.

Endo - Be surprised if he stays.

Robbo & Tsmiskas - A obvious area we can improve on. Can’t imagine they’ll both stay.

Elliott - I know there have been questions marks but I assume he stays.

Diaz - Question marks again.

Nunez  - Like left back, an obvious area we can improve on.

Jota - Rumours of him and Arsenal. I wouldn’t like it, he’s also no good to us being injured so often.

And that doesn’t take into account the contract renewals (I still think at least Salah & VVD stay).

I know some scoff at the “big summer” quotes, the above could be a very large turnover, it might actually happen this summer.

Would be very foolish, and cost too much money to do all that at once. Hopefully the club have a plan to do things a couple of players at a time.

But then it would have made sense to get in a couple of players this season if we did have a long term plan.

We have 6 forwards and Doak plus Danns to come back, I think we can afford the keep hold of Jota, he scores goals in important games, is a terrific finisher and offers something different to the other forwards. Plus are we going to find many strikers even near his level who would be as happy being benched?

This is exactly why you make little tweeks to the squad at least once a season & don't just swerve transfers for two years.

I think he’s at risk of helping fund a big summer for us. He’s at an age where he’ll take up a squad place next year, he cost peanuts and he’ll bring good money in. I think if we keep hold of the big players and self fund the incomings him and Endo could make way.

We are so arrogant we probably looked at the success of the midfield overhaul and thought we can do that with the whole side...and on the cheap!

True. I think we’d get a lot of money for majority of players.

Alisson - Signed in 2018, I assume we’ve paid the vast majority, if not all, back to Roma. Especially if Saudi is calling…

Keheller - 100% profit.

Gomez - I assume close to 100% profit.

Robbo - Same as Alisson.

Jota - Signed in 2020. I don’t imagine we’d owe Wolves much more.

Nunez - Probably our biggest remaining transfer. Again, if Saudi is calling, assume would clear that.

I assume Endo and Tsmiskas wouldn’t command huge fees.

Any academy player (especially Doak) would get 100% profit.

Even if VVD stayed, he’d still get plenty games.

Like Konate & Quansah, Konate won the shirt back and had played well. That’s in incentive.

I assume we’ll be looking to rest VVD more in upcoming seasons as well, like shite promoted sides at home etc.

If we were doing shit, I could probably understand the perpetual tedium, but we are doing brilliantly.

Can we maybe just have a "glass half empty" thread, where Beefy and other perma-dissatisfied people can hang?

I personally can't imagine having such a pessimistic perspective.
