A point gained or two dropped? The case be argued either way as the Reds twice recovered from losing positions to get themselves into a winning one, only to then throw it away in stoppage time.

Chris Smith is joined by Dan Thomas and TLW Editor Dave Usher to try and make sense of a wild game at St James' Park, and to then look ahead to this weekend's final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park (probably).

I reckon not playing Gomez and Quansah in their more natural positions is the first big mistake Slot’s made. It left us more exposed defensively but more importantly fucked up both our playing the ball out and our attack on the right.

Can Kelleher do better for the first?

No.

Could Alisson, Courtois?

Yes.

It's hit pretty central, it's a fair way out.

On reflection, it's probably one of those where Ali's positioning is such that he just catches it and it looks like a routine save where the commentator says "Isak got hold of that one and either side of Alisson would have given him problems"

Yeah, or Ali just paws it back up the pitch.

It's actually quite helpful, the last podcast was wondering how Slot would deal with the Kelleher/Ali situation...turns out Kelleher heard the podcast and decided to make it easier.

1 hour and 12 minutes of "Fucking Newcastle, Referee prick, Everton fuckers" and then Dave tells the hair pulling story and the cursing is beeped?  I'm very confused.

Other than that, a personally confusing pod as I'm just annoyed and confused about how to feel about it being a good point.  Even though I know it probably is.

Just gotta say, Dan responding to the 'sounding like Sean Dyche' bit by saying 'next thing you know I'll be blaming refer... oh hang on that's a terrible example' was a low key, all-time great TLW Pod moment.

Then a…

*mumble mumble* grrrrr *incoherent noise*

Didn’t really help his cause either.

I think Gomez has been doing fine in the Ibou slot. Quansah at RB for me was the weird thing. Why couldn’t Trent start? I know. Being saved for Everton. Turns out we needed him from the start.

If we’d have gone in a goal up at 1/2 time, for me, the switch could have been Trent off, Joe to RB and Quansah in the central role.

Anyway…we didn’t replace Big Joel when he left. 2 defenders down and here’s where the season might unravel. I say might.

Amazing temporary lack of self awareness there.

Got in a big row in the tunnel with Tarkowski. Some of our lads didn't like how much they were celebrating so it got a bit heated and Dom was yelling stuff along the lines of "You're fucking shite, I can't believe we lost to you, you're the worst team I've lost to in my whole career" and things of that nature.

Joelinton has played wide left with Gordon on the right and Willock in midfield lately so maybe Slot wanted Quansah's presence to deal with the big galoot.

Of maybe Slot wanted to get a Gomez/Van Dijk partnership going while Konate is out, as Dave said. Either way, it didn't work and he should have changed it earlier.
