Arsenal 2 Liverpool 2 (Oct 27 2024)

A point away at Arsenal is rarely a bad one, and that certainly applies here. It’s a good point for us, less so for them. They’ve finished above us the last couple of seasons, they’ve beaten us in the league at their place in both of those seasons and although we went into this one above them in the table, we haven’t been blowing the doors off anyone and our form has not been as convincing as the results have been.

So I think pretty much all of us would have taken a point before the game and I have no complaints about the result, particularly as it was fair on the balance of play. I have some concerns about the performance, but it’s mostly the same kind of stuff I covered in the Chelsea game. I don’t like certain things I’m seeing and it can be a difficult watch at times, but I don’t see them as long term issues by any means, more so just inevitable teething problems to be ironed out.

Slot has only been here five minutes and is over-achieving with his results so far, yet he never uses that to pump his own tires. It’s usually the opposite, he’s very honest and open about what he’s seeing and based on the way he’s spoken about some performances we’ve had (notably Chelsea), there’s absolutely no way he will have been happy with what he saw for most of the first half, and parts of the second for that matter.

Yet the results in both games are sound, so there is a lot of comfort in that. Far better to iron out the kinks while picking up results than doing it while sifting through the demoralising debris of losses. I don’t really feel any better or worse about us after this game. I would have liked us to have played better and to have been a bit more on the front foot (ok, a lot more), but maybe we’re just not good enough to do that at the moment? We were shite against Wolves and Palace away so it’s probably unrealistic to think we’d go and stick it to Arsenal.

So while there are things I didn’t like and I don’t think we played well, I actually think Arsenal should be feeling more concerned than us because this isn't a good result for them. They led twice and had us where they wanted us, but Arteta is so obsessed with defending these days they just tried to settle for the 2-1 and see the game out. When Gabriel went off they just parked the bus completely and barely left their own half, trying to hold on to what they had.

Maybe we contributed to that by playing much better in the second half, but did we play better because they surrendered the initiative to sit back and go into the defensive mode we’ve seen from them a lot this season already? It’s the chicken and the egg I suppose, which is a fitting analogy given I’m talking about Arteta and Slot.

Good report.  I agree with Brownie about Robbo - I thought he was struggling for form most of last season and hoped it was just the injuries he had. However it’s starting to look like his legs are going and this seems to be more obvious when he plays twice a week. Getting worked to death every international break isn’t helping him.

Correct Dave, only Firmino and Mane has assisted Salah more.

After looking into this a bit, Im a bit worried about the lack Of assist from Diaz though, what the fuck is he doing?

Assists to Salah (players included if the combination have 5 assists between them)

Firmino - 22

Mane -13

Trent -11

Nunez - 11

Robertson - 11

Jota - 9

Henderson - 7

Ox-Chamberlain - 6

Jones - 6

Gakpo - 4

Shaqiri - 4

Fabinho - 4

Keita - 3

Van Dijk - 2

Diaz - 1

I get the pleasing on the eye scenario but Slot didn't want to be out of the race by November as used to happen before Klopp.

Diaz needs to stop trying to dribble his way to the post and look for a pass earlier.

Three tough games in a week with no defeats is a great return.

Never seen a good game when we lose.

It’s not just the goal that never was they are crying about, they are also showing only one particular angle for Konate’s tackle on Martinelli and claiming a penalty, even though the other angle clearly shows Ibou gets the ball.

Never mind the fact it was obvious that Ibou got the ball, Martinelli didn’t appeal for that whatsoever either, and tried to play on. You’d think that would be a dead give away.

Simple reason re the Klopp and Slot ",times" Jurgen built from the front backwards. The final key pieces to the jigsaw were Fabinho Ali and VVD.

Let's hope once Arne has the back end sorted the front end will be explosive.

Second in league. Manager been here 5 mins no real pre season never managed over here and every week is a "first" encounter.

Not dead exciting  but potentially......

I didn't even mention that as it was such a nothing incident. If they're crying about that then they're even worse than I thought.

That is a pretty mental stat and doesn't reflect well on Diaz. Two behind Keita for fucks sake! Three behind Big Shaq.

Tiny tiny bit on Kweev on Saka goal.

There is a split second when Starboy chops it back to open up his left foot where Kweev could have come out big and just maybe block it or make him miss. It is one for WWAD.?

Maybe harsh but basically agree on Robbo, nothing more certain than the check inside...

Yeah not so much a Kelleher error as almost all goalkeepers would do the same, but feel like Alisson would have been slightly better positioned cutting the angle and made himself bigger.

When Shankly set up his second team in the 70/71 season he admitted that he was going to make them hard to play against as he didn't want the younger players to lose confidence. The result was a defence that conceded only 24 goals (in 42 games) but only scored 42. We were definitely a hard watch that season, but things soon got better.

I just think being so close to goal, on his left foot, you'd have to make yourself bigger than Andre the Giant!
