PODCAST: Arsenal 2 Liverpool 2 - Match Reaction

I'm only about half way through listening to this one, and there is a lot of negativity so far and it's frustrating that Slot is being measured against the best, most creative, most inspiring manager in the world; and he trying to do it under a cloud of three of his best players potentially leaving while barely being given a penny to spend to bring his own players in last summer.

Nevertheless, I still find it a very enjoyable listen and wouldn't suggest you change a thing. It's your (Dave and mates) podcast to do what you want with it, and the listeners will choose to listen or not. Yes fine make suggestions for pod subjects and discussion points and send in questions etc, and we can all have disagreements about the points made.  But I can only say thanks as ever to you lot for spending your personal time making it. Thanks fellas.

The alternative is to not record so soon after the game, which would be much easier for me actually, especially in midweek as it means I'm not up until 1am editing and posting, then getting grief from the missus for waking her up when I go to bed. "You're not getting paid for this, why are you wasting so much time doing it?" I don't even have a valid answer to that, she's right. It is ridiculous that I'm waking her up when she's got to be up for work the next morning, but people want immediate reaction, so that's what we try and do. That comes at a cost sometimes though, like with this one.

Great idea!

Get the match report out, then do the podcast the day after.

Most sensible thing written on this forum in ages, including all my pearls of wisdom.

I always want to let the match report breathe for at least 24 hours. The only time I tend to do it straight away is if when we've been really bad and I need to just get it all off my chest while I'm feeling it. Writing it before I've seen the highlights, interviews and had time to process it all is not the way to do it.

I've been doing this a long time, I know what works! Get back to the other thread where you're dismantling Vinicius Jr, you're in over your head in this one!

We were missing Kelleher, Bradley Matip, Robertson, Tsimikas, Szoboszlai, Endo, Bajcetic Salah and Doak for the Emirates game in February, so forgive me if I couldn't give a rattlers fuck that Arsenal had 2 starters plus Tomiyasu out injured on Sunday.

They did finish with a makeshift back 4 but it was a back 9 for most of the 2nd half, and Arsenal are a well drilled outfit, so they were difficult to break down.

Arsenal and Arteta can cry about their numerous missed great chances in the 1st half, but they really didn't exist, beyond shots outside the box and frees from falling over.

The 2nd half was a mirror of the 1st, with us dominating possession but playing in front of a defensive set-up. We were away from home though and are 4 points better off than Arsenal, so it is a better point for us.

Arsenal have sat on a lead three times this season, on Sunday and v Brighton and City (albeit with 10 men in both) and conceded an equaliser in all three. That will dent their confidence but hasn't yet discouraged Arteta from moving towards being a defensive coach.

I don't think you can win a title playing like Arsenal, relying on set-pieces and clinging on to one goal leads and hopefully Slot encourages us out a bit more when winning. However, we do seem solid when doing it.

Some feedback on the pods from me as we’re on the subject, I might be on my own but I feel that they’re a bit too long. They are on average around 90 minutes long, with some getting close to two hours. I listen to other podcasts on other subjects from cricket to politics, and most come in at 45 minutes to an hour. I mostly listen to podcasts when I’m in the car, and I’m very rarely in the car long enough to listen to a 90 minutes episode.

I think it would be much better to try and limit them to an hour, with the occasional longer one for a huge match, or one with loads of talking points. I actually think this would benefit you lads recording them as they would take up a bit less of your time. Dave saying that his missus gives him a hard time for getting into bed late and then waking her up made me think about this.

When Chris is the host, he gives the pods a bit more structure and keeps the discussion on track, whilst Dave lets things run wild and the discussion can veer off onto other things. I enjoy the way both of you host, but I do think a bit more structure and discipline, with the aim to bring it in around the 60 minute mark might benefit you guys and us listeners. I’ve found myself skipping some this season as I don’t always have the time to listen to 90 minute plus pods a week.

Just some food for thought, and others might not agree, but just wanted to add my tuppence worth whilst Johnny H was on the attack.

I’m almost as bad as Dave for waffle but I find myself on non-Smithy pods often saying things like, “Anyway, I think we’ve done the match, haven’t we? Shall we talk about [x]?”  Dave then tends to say, “Yes. Wait a minute! We need to talk about [y] first.” and we go down a twenty minute rabbit hole. All part of the TLW podcast “charm“.

Tend to agree with Vincent, quite a few times I have ended up cutting it short for various reasons meaning to go back and finish it, but life has intervened ( or a fresh pod has been delivered ). Look forward to them avidly but not sure they should be the same length of time as the match being discussed.

I’m here for the waffle and rabbit holes. Jib the footy talk off.

Nah, open the app and see an almost 2hr or more chunk of listening and you know that going to be some good shit. That's where the fish tanks, John O'Shea and golfing stories lie.

And parrot updates.

I do love the offbeat stuff and I’m not saying to stop doing that. I love the pods because they’re not just pure football talk, if I wanted that I’d listen to something from The Athletic or one of the numerous other football podcasts out there. I don’t listen to any other Liverpool podcasts because I don’t enjoy them, I’m just making a suggestion that I think could improve them, but as Brownie says, “you can’t please everyone”. Anyway that’s the last I’ll say on the subject, I’ll dip in and out depending on how much time I have.

The rambling and wandering off topic are usually the best bits.  An hour and a half feels about right to me with scope for extra on special occasions.  The podcast has a good ‘chatting bollocks in a pub’ feel about it and cutting it short would be like ‘just a quick half for me and then I’m off for me tea’.

This is starting to feel like someone going to see a band, liking them, getting to know them and then trying to dictate which songs they should play.  The pods are great as they are, they piss all over other footy related ones and are great to listen to when driving or walking. If you can't deal with a 1.5hr podcast then treat it as a two-parter and listen to it separately, it's not hard. The whole charm of the pods is based around 3 (ish) lads chatting shit about footy and other stuff, if you try to alter this then you are fucking about with the whole ethos that got you listening in the first place. Ingrates!

I really enjoy the pods and have listened to 90% of them in full. The drifting off topic can be distracting but also allows some gold. To be fair, I think you get the gold but also a modicum of structure when Chris moderates which helps the flow, but that's just personal taste.

I do agree with Johnny re the Arsenal pod that the lads were a bit down on the team performances. Yes, we had Klopp, but he is gone and no manager on earth could replicate what he did and especially how he did it. Slot has the team producing results, scoring goals and (bar the Chelsea game, that he wasn't happy with) having more possesion than the opposition.

I have no problem with Paul and Brownie expressing their feeling of loss, I think we all feel it, but the point was laboured and covered half the pod, after an away game against one of our rivals, where we had rescued a late point, having had more possession, more shots on target and more corners than the opposition.
