Peter Cormack

Sad news. He was quite a stylish midfielder, and, subtly, almost as great a partner in crime to Keegan as Toshack was known to be. I remember one signature move of his: he'd be in the centre circle, or thereabouts, would turn back and receive a diagonal ball in from the right, let it roll in front of him, swivel and play it on diagonally to the left wing, and as he swivelled his left arm would go up instinctively like a matador eluding a bull. 'Ole!' some fans would shout. I remember that because it he did it at my first match at Anfield, and it stayed in my mind so much I ended up trying it in a school game - needless to say, someone absolutely clattered into me as a response to my affectation. I thoroughly deserved it. But it was great when he did it.

Rest in peace, Peter.

Mentioned this to my Dad and Cormack was playing for Hibs the first time he went to see Rangers (at Easter Road in 1970). He rated him very highly as a player.

Sad news.

He's a bit of an anorak, my Dad, he's just messaged to say Cormack also came on as a sub for Ray Kennedy at the first Liverpool game he attended (Carlisle away, 1974)...

This is oddly moving.

One of my favourites at the time. Looking back it was probably because he was a handsome lad who seemed to fit into the 70's vibe unlike a lot of the other players. Put it this way, I cant imagine Tommy Smith playing bass for the Bay City Rollers, but Peter would have fitted in seamlessly

. He was an effortlessly smooth player, but strangely my main memory of him is strangely in a scrap at Anfield with Derby County in the mid-70s. A skirmish started on the edge of their box after a free kick for us and developed into a proper ruck. Cormack ran around the fringes looking for somebody to fight but failed and as a last resort just ran up and hoofed Charlie George up the arse.

RIP YNWA

i never got to see him play sadly. i started going as a kid the season he moved away. strangely though, there are some players from before that time, because of TV I have some type of an image of them. i never saw ron yeats play for an example, but i still have seen bits of him over the years. i don't really have those types of memories of Cormack, which is a shame, as by all accounts he was a cracking player. my grandad mentioned him often when i was younger.

I remember wondering why a fella named Dalglish was getting in the Scotland team ahead of Peter Cormack in the 1974 World Cup, as I thought he was a much better player, and when we bought Dalglish I was puzzled why we’d done so, especially having sold Keegan!

Glad we did of course, and it shows how much (or little!) I know, but I always thought Peter Cormack was a classy player and it was a pity that injury caused him to leave us.

RIP Peter.

Very sad news. Peter made a big difference when he was bought in at the start of the 72-73 season and his clever play and goals from midfield helped turn us into champions. Here he is scoring against Leeds on Easter Monday 1973, the game that virtually clinched the title.

My mum’s favourite, apparently.

One of those names form that era I don’t really have a handle on, like Lawlor, Lloyd and one or two others.
