The Reds' perfect start to the season came to abrupt and sobering halt as Nuno Espirito Santo did a number on Arne Slot at Anfield. The visitors executed their gameplan to perfection as Liverpool spluttered, stuttered and eventually completely stalled.

Chris Smith is joined by Julian Richards and TLW Editor Dave Usher to pick through the bones of a dismal afternoon at Anfield.

I think its a bit of a worrying performance. I think Slots solutions to what he was watching was grim. To be fair even Klopp couldn't do much with players playing that shit, some of their over hit crosses, passes and game intelligence was amateur. That wasn't good enough it was unacceptable. Forest are shit and they thoroughly deserved to win at Anfield. Hopefully it is just a bad game and remains that way. Was it Spurs who Klopp had a nightmare against and it kickstarted a better run. How Slot and the players react to it will be more important.

I hope there's more to Slot ball than this variation of sterile domination. I hope he's a quick learner because he's going to have his eye opened quickly pretty much like Klopp did himself.

Agree with a lot of this, plus my first thought when i saw the team sheet was a bit of worry that he didn’t even rotate 1 or 2 players. I didn’t think for a moment we’d play so badly but it doesn’t suggest a huge level of confidence in the rest of the squad yet either, I can see Chiesa jumping the queue ahead of Darwin and Gakpo.

With more opponents likely to set up in a similar way to Forest yesterday, it would be more effective for the team to maintain width. At the same time, you have to occupy the person looking to double-up so that your own player out wide has more chance of being in a 1-on-1. Something akin to what Atalanta did to us, but with more emphasis on trying to break through rather than stopping a team with more possession from finding gaps. Get that aspect right, then there's just the small matter of making the right decisions in the final third.

I've only watched the first half, and I know the second half sounds like it'll be a tough watch, but I was impressed with us in the first half with the exception of Jota who shouldn't be leading our line.

Forest were alehouse, particularly Yates and the Argie lad, and White-Gibbs used his England credentials to buy free kicks.  It was a grim performance from them, and another ref would have booked a few of them early.

And a huge slice of luck for them with the Diaz shot against the post, and the goalkeeper howler that incredibly didn't go off his arse into the net, at which point Forest would have collapsed.

It's classic sliding doors, and a top forward would have put us ahead in that game.  He was sat on the bench.

Second half doesn't matter so much, the clock ticks on and each minute emboldens them and makes us more nervous, that's explicable, expected. It's all about the first half.
