Fight! Oasis v Stone Roses v Charlatans

Popularity is not the same as influence. Selling loads of tickets isn't enough, on its own, to make a band "important".

Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes were clearly influenced by bands from a generation before Oasis. The Killers had a Britpop-flavoured debut album, but have lasted longer than Oasis, because they had more than one string to their bow. The same is probably true of Kasabian, but I honestly can't say I've listened to them that much.  I never really got into The Libertines, but I'd be surprised if they had a moment of inspiration when they first heard that you can rhyme "hall" and "cannonball".

You love Oasis, I get it. But there's nothing wrong with loving them for what they are; there's no need to pretend they're something else.

Where am I pretending they are something else???? Oasis changed the music landscape for a long time in this country. They still influence the kids to this very day. Denying it is laughable. Oasis are massive and probably the biggest band this country has seen since Led Zeppelin and have been since the first time Wonderwall got played on Radio 1.

Oasis get played on juke boxes up and down the country probably more than any other band, fuck me Ken Bruce played Aquiesce on Greatest Hits radio the other day and that was an Oasis b-side!

You don’t like Oasis. I get it and there’s nothing wrong with disliking them but let’s not pretend they aren’t what they are.

I think you are going too far the other way from AoT, and @Mook has it about right.

There’s no real defining sound that Oasis introduced or popularised so they don’t have a lasting influence on music in that way. They weren’t innovators, they just wrote a few catchy indie pop songs.

However they were absolutely massively popular and really captured public imagination / the zeitgeist whatever. They are still seen as the defining band of that era, even if people reckon there were better bands at the time.

but they also have an enduring popularity that no other bands from that era can touch.

no one would argue they are the most innovative band but they definitely offered a bit different in 94,especially in terms of attitude and image.
