Pure quality there.

If it is a trio then the other band only should get 3 fellas as well.

Those three absolutely twat the gallaghers plus one any day of the week. In those same outfits.

Van der Graaf would pummel them as well.

Has he ever done a Manc bands/artists tournament?

And if not, what the Hell does he think the international break is for?

The Smiths lost the World Cup final to either Jimmy Saville or Jimmy page, I get my paedophiles confused but it was definitely a nonce called Jim. That said, Morrissey has also proved to be a bitter nutter in his old age. Never meet your heroes..

My brother in law was kind of friends with the drummer from the charlatans for a short while before they moved out of the area and he gave us free tickets to their gig was pretty good, really nice guy.

I think the keyboard player used to do a Smiths tour of Manchester. I went on one with  Mrs Hicks and a couple of bemused Japanese tourists. At one point we were all taking pictures of Morrissey’s old house and the current owner came out to shoo us away.

Mrs Hicks

There was once a Mrs Kurtz, then a Mrs Willard, now a Mrs Hicks. The forum (me) doubts your lothario credentials. In my experience women are not fans of A-Z competitions and/or an obsession with dahlias.

Although you do live in the south where all sorts of inexplicable nonsense goes on.

Brown nor the Gallaghers can sing. Brown sounds like a spooling tape deck at the bottom of the sea. No idea about Burgess.

Now, Mavers, on the other hand, had a voice like a particularly wonderful public address speaker... So you can shove your Mancs...

Who are the real charlatans here then?

Very good.

Can’t believe somebody negged me for that comment, does Tim Burgess post on the forum here?

Oasis & Stone Roses will go down in the conversation alongside The Beetles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and a few others for one of the best / most important British bands of all time, The Charlatans will not.

They won't.  They're a million miles behind The Beatles, Stones and Led Zep, in every conceivable respect.

Spot on.

I'm a big Roses fan but they don't belong in that conversation.

Whether we agree with the merit of it or not, their popularity and cultural importance at the times will mean they are in those discussions.

The Charlatans will not anywhere near that conversation. They aren’t even close to the best band from Greater Manchester - and I reasonably liked them back in the day.

Oasis and the Stone Roses were each leading artists of a wave of music that was fashionable for a couple of years, then ended without much trace. The same can be said for lots of artists. (I'll take the point that the Charlatans never achieved that status.)

The Beatles, in particular, changed everything. Their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, on its own, was of greater cultural importance than the entire works of Oasis and The Stone Roses combined.

This is true: they're from the West Midlands, via Northwich.

Hmm, definitely an argument to at least say Cheshire…

Anyway, my point stands. Huge British cultural musical events…

Beetlemania.

Rolling Stones at Hyde Park.

Led Zepplin at Knebworth.

Queen at Wembley.
Stone Roses at Stone Island.

Oasis at Knebworth

Etc etc

The closest The Charlatans come to this list was being one of the opening acts for Oasis at Knebworth.

Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols, The Who and The Kinks all much bigger in terms of cultural importance. I'd say Joy Division/New Order are a fair way ahead of both as well, as far as Manc bands go.

It's Spike Island. Stone Island are a particularly woeful fashion brand.
