I get the one career thing but on the flip side he's seen how long it took for the club to get back to the top. All the struggles, he felt them like a fan (as a kid) and from inside the club as a player.

He must have seen all the big players leave, we don't buy world class players, and we usually get one every 15 years (home grown)

By him leaving he must realise it fucks us. People will say we'll be fine but I'm not so sure, it's a pivotal transfer in my opinion. We get no money, and we can't replace him. With mo, Virg getting old and Alisson breaking down a lot. We don't have any world class players left....he's the only one

It's hard to attract top class players too, they look around like "who's in the squad, who am I going to play with"

Trent staying helps us hugely and makes rebuilding easier. I come from the opinion that he owes the club, he's been there since he was 6. They've nurtured him, grown his talent and it's the reason he earns the money he does. Others will say he owes us nothing, but I don't understand that.

But yeah I have been to Madrid, it's nice, reminded me of London. He can live anywhere in the world in 8 or 9 years time though. He ain't gonna miss out in life. Don't think I'd boo him either but I'd certainly tell him to fuck off and call him a cunt

Agree to disagree fella. And Madrid is fuck all like London.  I mean absolutely fuck all like it.

Not totally true.

Neither are on the coast, both have loads of buildings and fucking traffic is a nightmare.

But yeah, after that - I'm struggling. Royal family in both? Loads of buskers? Everyone's in a fucking rush?

The Royal Palace of Madrid pisses on Buckingham Palace. Not as busy either I don’t think.

Yeah I guess we hold that candle.

The problem with leaving it so late is that the offers will already have been sent from oligarch clubs to the agents, and players are greedy bastards - so they'll already be picking what colour Bugatti to get.

Again, that's on the club. Should never have got to this stage.

To be honest, I'm not worried from the perspective of what Saudi can offer. Or even psg as their league is shit. I don't think any of the 3 will move to another English club from here. I can imagine a situation where all 3 could end up at a Barca, Madrid, psg, munich because they don't feel valued here, but feel they've got more to offer at the top of the game and we don't want it. If their heads have been turned by Saudi, well we can't and shouldn't try to compete with that. We have other things to offer - and the fact all 3 have indicated they want to stay, suggests they know that too. I'd be really fucked off if they end up at playing elsewhere in Europe for a kind of salary we could afford.

For me the problem in leaving it late is they will feel under valued. Most people on here at some point in their career will have worked somewhere where they don't feel their contribution is recognised. And it never ends well.

I do wonder if the plan is to completely reset the wage bill?

If the three of them all leave we won't have a single player on 200k+

It's something that Chelsea are doing, and why they couldn't get the Osimhen deal over the line.

Been wondering the same. The cyclical approach. Let the older high earners leave then spend big on low wage replacements, a bit like when they took over.

That gave us Downing, Adam and Mignolet though.

We have significantly improved in that area though. There's no way we'd sign the equivalent of Charlie Adam today!

so all these fellas who they're paying £100m for are on pretty small wages? (well small comparative to their fee)

I dont think either Salah or van Dijk have real options. The big clubs around Europe arent lining up to pay huge wages to ageing players the way the economy of the sport is right not.

I agree, which is why i said "I'd be really fucked off if they end up at playing elsewhere in Europe for a kind of salary we could afford. " And saudi don't come into it. if they want saudi money, we should just say we're not in that fight.

It depends. Could afford and should do are different things. If we can actually replace one of them adequately, we should probably do it. And then for sure keep the other.

i am not really sure there are many players that make them easy to replace. we should be locking trent down anyway, losing him on a free is bad business as well as bad football. as for the other two, we need to replace them soon because of their age, for me this is where you have time to grow a young player into the roles. keep the players while they are both absolutely top players. but groom someone to replace them

I think the key is Saudi. If they will for sure buy Salah anyway, then there is no point in not trying to re-sign him, but thats impossible to know. van Dijk is the most irreplaceable, so he is the one we should try to keep, irrespective of the other two. Trent, I think there is no chance.

Trent doesnt really want to stay though, lets be honest.

I'm inclined to agree.

He's won everything there is to win here. He can go to Madrid, pocket a fortune, and be remembered as a legend in World football playing alongside Bellingham, Mbappe, and Vinicius Junior.

Or he can stay in a league dominated by state owned clubs.

I think Trent is the most likely to be here next season as it's clearly a toss up between Madrid or staying here. He won't go anywhere else.

I think Van Dijk is the second most likely to stay due to wanting/needing to play at a high level going in to the 2026 world cup.

Salah is the most likely to leave, due to being on the highest wages, The December Afcon next year, He has the luxury of being able to play anywhere and will still start for Egypt too. We also know that Saudi Arabia will offer Ronaldo levels of money to try and get him over there next summer.

The problem with Trent is that he is doing a leverage play and to me, his demands probably involve things like captaincy and highest paid. And guess who the captain and highest paid are.

I can't see any other reason why it's gotten to the point where he has only months left on his deal. There are no mitigating factors for the club, like age. He is a highly marketable player, he is from the city.

Madrids not THAT good. Once stayed in a really posh hotel for a few days whilst working at a work conference and it was right next door to the biggest industrial estate you've ever seen. Its only the downtown bit next to the stadium that's a standout.
