That's nonsense. He clearly sees him every day and if he felt he was up to it, he'd be playing him.

The idea you want him to be playing more is fine, but the idea you'd take a pop at the manager that's seeing us top of everything so far is quite astonishing.

I’ll take a pop based on what he said. He said match fitness which suggests he needs match minutes. Hes been available apart from illness for about 6 weeks.

And he's not convinced his coach that he can trust him to play in games that are tougher than league 2 Accrington Stanley as yet.

ok so why is he saying he needs match fitness then?????

Some of you are bonkers in here.

Cause he likely isn't match fit.

He's challenging him to prove he should play.

It's similar to when Klopp called our sturridge for his injuries being something he needed to do more to push through.

It's saying, I want to get you in the team more but I can't. I want to trust you but I can't. Make me have to pick you.

Because the Premier league games might just be harder and more intense or are all the teams exactly the same?

As a bit of a Chiesa fan, I should be honest enough to mention that he's a complete liability on defensive corners.

Like Mo, I get the distinct impression heading isn’t his fortè.

Eh?

If he isn’t match fit, he can only get match fit by playing. He’s available and not being used from the bench.

If he’s challenging him to play, how does he succeed in that challenge without opportunities?

Sturridge was refusing to play at all, saying he wasn’t fit enough for selection, hence being called out by Klopp. Chiesa is sitting on the bench unused. It’s the total opposite.

If Slot is saying he wants Chiesa in the team more, surely throwing him on when we are coasting like @BeefStroganoff mentioned gives him chance to do that?

I've only heard this morning that he was ill the last few days.

If that's the case, and he would've started otherwise, then I maybe read things differently now.

It's probably more simply a statement of fact and not a message.

That said, he still would've played him more if he thought he could rely on him to deliver in the games he was on the bench for.

Hopefully that's a positive step forward for him now.

He took his goal well yesterday and was unlucky with the shot off the post.

About 2 or 3 minutes before that shot off the post my mate commented it was like watching a player in a legends game. You can see he has something but he looks unfit and lacking any sharpness.

Not for the first time I thought Slot made a pointed comment in the pre-match press conference on how his training and dedication level compares to Mo's. It's obviously a high bar but if he's not fully fit and missing training for little things here and there it would explain why he isn't being given a proper chance.

Chiesa is a more extreme example, our players in general seem to be taking longer to return from injury than previously.

I think we all excepted Alisson, Jota & Elliott to return to the first team squad quicker than they did.

Personally, I’m Ok with it. I’d rather we weren’t rushing players back to break down again or rushing them back when they don’t have any form and our performances deteriorate - both happened last season.

Contrary to common belief, we actually have a very good, deep squad. We’ve continued to pick results without players already. Last season rushing players back cost us. The best thing to do is not only get players fit, also get them playing well before getting them back in the first team squad.

I don't think Chiesa has ever actually had 'an injury' since he has been here.

Slot has said he’s had a knock here and there and Illness.

The point still stands, we are being extra cautious with players at the moment.

We got him on the cheap knowing he’s clearly got the ability but also has struggled to get back from that shitty injury. If holding him off sees him make a difference in the second half of the season the it’s the kind of smart and shrewd stuff I expect from the management team.

In short, he’s fucking boss this Fede lad is.

I don't think slot means he's lacking match fitness in the way we would in England/english, so games will give him that. I think he's saying he's not fit enough to play football matches at PL level.
