The reason for Chiesa’s exclusion is his ongoing battle with his fitness.

Manager Arne Slot, after the 5-0 win against West Ham United confirmed that Chiesa was ruled out due to fitness issues.

He stated, “We are working on match fitness and whenever we can we bring him with the team.”

“We thought it would be better for him to have some extra training sessions instead of joining us.”

He's had way more time than a regular preseason. There must be an underlying issue (similar to when Jones had days when he could train or play and days when he has to rest even if that was match day). It's preposterous to think it's only match fitness.

Maybe we’re just working hard to rebuild what was a very good player before his injury a few years ago instead of rushing him back and him being fucked again.

This isn’t a box office signing we’re waiting to see, we paid fuck all for him in comparison to figures these days so I think we’re doing the right thing.

Alarm bells were ringing when Juventus were happy to cut their losses in the fee they received for him. He should be fit enough to make some feature by now. There is no excuse for a professional footballer to be overweight these days. The sort of signing we would be taking the piss out of Man U for.

I think he needs to drop a few pounds after the lay off as well, based on the sub appearance. He's not overweight per se, but looked like he was carrying a bit more than he was used to.

He's deffo overweight yes, and has been since he arrived here.

Fact that 4 months later it is still case is not a good sign.

People also talk about pre-season - he was playing in the euros with Italy as late as the end of June.

So in reality after the usual what 3 weeks rest players would start pre-season - so let's call it last week in July would be back. OK he missed that but he was with us at beginning of Sep so we are talking maybe a month he missed of training, he has had 4 now since then and to still 'not be fit' and clearly overweight is a problem.

Coming back from an ACL takes time. We took our time with VVD, but it still took 18 months before he was back to his best. It's 2 years since Chiesa did his ACL but it seems that he was rushed back. Short term pain, long term gain. Get the strength and conditioning sorted.

He made 37 apperances for Juventus last season and 33 the season before. All post his ACL - his current woes are very, very unlikely to be linked to an injury he had what is nearly 3 years ago now (Jan 22) and has played nearly 100 games since getting.

Nov 22 he returned (nigh on 10 months out with the injury).

I think they could be. He doesn't look like he was ever given time to concentrate on strength and conditioning.

Having said that, I thought it was two years ago, not three, so I am a little less optimistic now, but I still think that there is a good chance that he'll turn out to be a bargain.

He deffo did it in Jan 22 - he returned to playing in Nov 22.

Since then (as said earlier) he played in 33 and 37 games in successive seasons for Juventus as well as 11 for Italy in the period.

So he has been back playing for over 2 years now and the injury happened nearly 3 years ago.

It does not all IMHO link to that now.

Other than a couple of flashes I thought he looked miles off it in the league cup.

I understand the fitness bit but if Slot thought he could even make a 10 minute impact you'd imagine he'd have been on the bench yesterday given that Nunez and Jota would be there to if we got an early injury that needed someone to play more minutes.

That he wasn't either suggests he's fucked again or that Slot thought Danns would be more useful if we needed to gamble with attackers late on.

Yes even I think this is looking a bit strange now.

Could have been useful to be able to bring him on when 3-0 up yesterday if his lack of game time is seen as the problem.

He looked a bit off the pace the other night but hopefully he can get some minutes at the end over the coming games. He's probably fit enough in terms of cardio but its the amount of sprinting and sudden change of direction, if you're not 100% in terms of power you can easily tear something by suddenly sprinting etc.

But if he's not injured (which is what we've been told), what's going on where he isn't capable of that? It's not some version of Rocky and we signed someone from the Sandon pub team. He's an international footballer who's been playing in one of the world's top leagues and he was at the euros just weeks before joining us. It doesn't make any sense. There has to be more to it than we are being told.

He's overweight and not very fit (in comparison to what club expects)

It is that simple.

He's not fat is he as @Code points out. He's hardly micky Quinn . And if it's a couple of pounds, it doesn't take 3 months to lose it - molby went far to fit as a butchers dog by spending a couple of months in prison!

He is fat by the standards of the likes of Salah.

He was fat when he signed and he still is.

Surely the club can sort a couple of months in prison for Chiesa. Frame him for an armed robbery or something.
