That Jeff Powell in the Daily Mail is one massive uber twat. Apparently England must be English right down from the manager to the kit man. Still tons of utter bellends in this country think it is 1945.

My first thought when I heard that he'd been appointed was that it was quite ambitious. He's not the best manager in the world but he's managed in England, won the CL and has managed two of the teams who regularly win trophies and compete in the CL. But lets just get Eddie Howe or Graham Potter because they are English. Whenever England get knocked out of a competition there's always a massive inquest as to why. Yet let's continue to appoint a good English patriot who will struggle to beat Slovakia or Montenegro in the group stages then lose as soon as they play anyone ranked in the top 10.

I'm not sure it's helpful - though it's certainly the laziest option - to depict any preference for a homegrown coach for the national side as evidence of rampant xenophobia. Most countries, as far as I know, have that preference, and that resistance, don't they? Would the German media embrace an English coach taking over the German national side? I very much doubt it. So it's wise to keep that issue separate from the particular ravings of certain hacks and pundits (who would surely be just as prevalent, mutatis mutandis, if the situation was reversed).

The question as to why an English coach failed to get the gig is not that much more interesting. None of them seem good enough. Then again, Southgate seemed even less promising than Teeth at Newcastle or Potter at no fixed abode, and, somehow or other (it still beats me) he did surprisingly well in the simple facts of tournament progress. So who the hell knows?

It'll at least be intriguing to see how the team plays under Tuchel. An air of brainlessness hovers over the players when they represent their country, and that's been a constant since Robson's era, when they were sufficiently switched on as to challenge some of his decisions. How Tuchel fares we'll have to wait and see.

I just heard Rory Smith make a well reasoned case for an English manager. Admitted he didn't like being on the same side as the Mail. But you certainly don't need to be a xenophobe to maintain that position.

I do wonder how long the FA had been negotiating with Tuchel. I assume it was before the Greece game? I’d doubt it’s all moved that quickly.

Did Carsley ever really want it? Only my opinion, I get the impression he didn’t.

Potter is available, his stock is obviously low due to his time at Chelsea.

Many won’t like this comment… despite being a little weasel, I actually think Eddie Howe is a very good coach.

After that, which England coaches are there? Dyche? Wilder? Dean Smith? Russell Martin?

The failure to bring top class English managers through the ranks is a bigger story than appointing a German.

I think Brazil wanted Ancelotti before they ended appointing the current coach, who has been a disaster by all accounts. You'd think Brazilians would be against any foreigner managing their national team.

I thought that was the reason Ancelotti didn’t take it?

Although they still have some good players, it’s hardly the 2002 Brazil squad.

Howe is the best of a bad bunch.

In order it would be,

1. Eddie Howe

2. Graham Potter

3. Sean Dyche

Then after that it's difficult to distinguish between Gary O'Neil, Chris Wilder, and Russell Martin.

You have some promising ones in the Chmapionship such as Michael Carrick, John Mousinho, Tom Cleverly, Scott Parker and even Wayne Rooney, but none of them are anywhere near ready.

That comment on Sven from Jeff Powell is a fucking disgrace. I hope the next Swede he sees fucking lamps him, probably one from his vegetable rack could do a job to be honest. I don't necessarily disagree with the notion that coaches should be from the nation they're coaching - I've always found it a bit odd that there's strict rules for players but nothing for anyone else involved in the setup, but that's the way it is and whether or not England is the "birthplace of football" and all that bollocks shouldn't make any difference.

I had thought Southgate's era had seen off some of the rampant stupidity around the nationalism surrounding the England team that we saw in the 90s and 00s but the reaction in some quarters to Carsley's non-singing of the anthem (and to this appointment) shows there's still pretty big pockets of it - and when it reveals itself it's both hilarious and depressing in equal measure. What'll be worse than the "RIP English football" mob though will be the causal racism of the ones who get behind him (probably due to results) in an arm's length way. There'll no doubt be some fucking shit songs about "Tuchel's dad bombed our chippy, but he's alright with me and John Terry" or some fucking bollocks.

Fucking silly country.

I see Carragher has weighed in - English managers for England jobs.

The same Carragher (and Neville as he’s weighed in too) that played under a Swedish and Italian manager for the English national team.  Utter hypocrites.
