The Labour government thread

Recommended Posts

They're shite Labour but I still don't know what the alternative is. They depend on that fact obviously, and always have in places like this. If people hadn't voted for them there'd be Badenoch in there spouting shit about grooming gangs and whatnot.

It's a poor set of options.

It might not be worth having tons of hope in but there could be a good chance that this will end up in the courts and some of it could be against the law due to discriminating against people with disabilities/mental health, the Equality Act is something I've seen mentioned a few times related to it but maybe there's other laws too. That could lessen the damage eventually though if it does get passed by MP's, even if it takes a good while to get sorted out.

Standard rate is 72 quid. My Mrs gets that and she has to use a walking frame now for walking out side the house. We have raised toilet seats, two bannisters on the stairs.

Be a lot easier to work 6 or so hours a week on minimum wage but sadly her health won't allow it

There was a kid on bbc website today who is on some form of disability or whatever it is called benefit who openly admitted that she uses the money to get ubers and that they are expensive because she says she can't get buses or trains.....She appeared to have no physical issues - now of course not all disabilities are visible, but I am of the view thst she does not need to use ubers to get about. Her issues she said were ADHD and Autism. She is one of what have been called "NEETS"....Not in Education, Employment or Training.

Sorry but for my money this isn't what the benefits system should be about and people like her need to get into work and of course work needs to pay and be worthwhile for them with decent wages etc. She did say she wants to work, to be fair to her - her being able to find work and not being on benefits is surely the right way forward.

The money used for benefits should go to those who need it most and where it helps the most - not to allow this kid to swan around in ubers instead of walking or using public transport.

With life expectancy having increased it was inevitable that the country needs to increase the age at which people can retire, this in turn is one of the reasons why we have a far higher rate now of people of "working age" with Musculoskeletal issues (alongside how fat the nation is, which in turn also has innumerable causes related to inequalities).

The bigger concern for the government will be the mental health issues in young people (due to its long term impact), a wonderful mix of; declining economic prospects, the mass advent of social media and the effects of the pandemic are probably the main source of that.

I do wonder for younger age groups if a works programme would help, i.e. to get people out of their bedrooms/flats/parents houses meeting other people and starting to generate feelings of self worth. Would need to being extremely careful/effective with the sell around that, but I think it would be particularly beneficial for young men.

The City. Investors. Big business. And anyone else who wants to exert control over others and pay as little tax as possible.

Under the new system, people who cannot cook a simple meal for themselves but can heat food up in a microwave would not be eligible for the payments unless they have other needs to be taken into account. Needing assistance to wash their hair or their body below the waist would also be judged as insufficient to claim the payments, which are currently worth up to £185 a week.

I like how this graphic in the BBC's 'In Depth' report on the benefits system doesn't seem to draw much comment, I wonder what was happening between say 1979 and 1997 and then 2010 to 2024 to cause such a rapid rise in the ill health of the working age population?

Could it be having a politically party that principally acts on the basis of extractional kleptocracy might be damaging for the nations overall health and long term economic prospects?

When my aunt was slipping into Alzheimer's, but still able to live independently, we couldn't trust her to cook and so we would make her nutricious meals and run them up to her house for her (about 30 doors away). We could do this because there were several of us to cover it. And that's what the politicians are relying on. Friend's, family, or just anyone taking up that slack or caring duties for the people who cannot fend for themselves, and all on your coin whether you can afford it or not. But if you don't have any sort of supprt network then you're fucked really, aren't you? In a puddle of your own piss? You'll just have to wait it pout until somebody arrives. Can you push a button on the microwave? Welcome to cheap slop that is probably put to shame by a prison kitchen.
