The Labour government thread

Very very happy to see this absolute abomination of an idea scrapped!

Sir Keir Starmer confirms Rwanda plan 'dead' on day one as PM - BBC News

Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed the Rwanda deportation scheme is "dead and buried", on his first full day as prime minister.

The Labour leader said he would end the "gimmick" of deporting migrants arriving in the UK illegally to Rwanda, which was established by the previous Conservative government.

Labour campaigned on a manifesto pledge to scrap the scheme, which has already cost around £310m, promising a more effective approach to tackling illegal immigration to replace it.

At his first press conference since entering Number 10, Sir Keir told journalists: "The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started."

He argued the scheme has "never been a deterrent" as it would only deport "less than1%" of small boat arrivals.

The financial implications of scrapping the scheme and the total bill to the taxpayer are not yet known. Ending the scheme also leaves a question mark over the fate of 52,000 migrants earmarked for deportation.

Obviously far too early too judge but it seems like they have been preparing for this for a while.

Compare that to the boris johnson administration who signed brexit without actually reading the small print.

It shows just how bad things were previously that Labour already look far more competent.

I think a lot of people have forgotten what it looks like to see a responsible fully functioning government.

He's made some good appointments which aren't all political, but seem based on who's the best person for the job - which is a world away from what's been going on since 2016 with an absolute circus of imbeciles. There's some brains in this team which is great to see.

He's also kicked a Tony Blair idea about ID cards into touch from the outset, showing that he won't have as much sway as some seem to think.

I've never agreed with the Starmer/Blair comparisons. Blair has always seemed comfortable with celebrity and clearly liked money, I've seen no indication that Starmer is inclined towards either. He pursued a CPS career when he could have got a more lucrative gig at a private company.

I've felt for a long time that he sees 'fixing Britain' as a problem to be solved, rather than being personally arsed about politics itself.

I’ve said for a long time I hope he’s keeping things up his sleeve that won’t be popular with the centre right. Hope he delivers and so far so good. Still not keen on Streeting though.

Put us back in the EU without even asking the morons in the street. Obviously we'd lose those sweet deals we already had but let's get back to closer ties with our European neighbours.*

Hopefully it's Reeves raising capital gains tax during her Autumn statement. It's appalling that those who make money from asset ownership are taxed less than the working population.  It'll be a real indication of how right wing they plan to be.

And lets add a few pence to those high earners too. After 40 years of raking it in they can give a bit of it back. If they aren't happy then 'See Ya.'

I obviously dont expect it to happen but it would be nice if it did.

I'll be happy if they say "we've checked the books and, with the money we've saved on Tory shit like Rwanda, it turns out we can afford to scrap the two-child benefit cap after all".

it feels likes that's what he wants as his legacy to be and he probably knows if he does that, the money aspect will take care of itself.

it feels a very positive start to me. the shutting down of rwanda quickly was good and meant braverman and other who cried, their voices were lost in all the other stuff that is rolling out. the reality is though, up to now it is words. they need to act and not make this government a talking shop. the country is in the shitter and there's no time to waste.

the sad part is it's likely to be the other way. we've checked the books and those cunts were hiding the real truth and there's blackholes in funding everywhere.

Spending all that money on PPE that then got burnt in a field.  Quality use of tax payers money.
