If we play our wingers that wide

Think that was, in part,  due to the personnel in the central positions and to create space.

As Slot said we played with two tens because of the lack of strikers which we're unlikely to do during the season.

I’m pretty sure Arne has come out and said we won’t play that formation this season and he only did it because we didn’t have any strikers available

Yeah.

During the season you will see us play with a real striker, but at this moment we have no one available,” he explained.

“Then with Dom and Harvey we’ve got two No. 10s, so we put them in the position they will play during the season as well.

“That was one of the reasons why we played with a double 10 instead of with a striker.

“That is maybe out of necessity, but for the rest, the style of play, with trying to build out from the back, that is our style.

“Not concede constant counter attacks…”

“To control the game, to not concede constant counter-attacks, that will hopefully be our style during the season.

“There were also, of course, many things we can improve, but that’s normal after two weeks.”

It was talked about before Slot officially arrived that he likes his wingers to stay very wide though.

I got in in time for kick off, and watched 20 minutes or so. The Mrs wanted to watch the Olympics opening ceremony and I didn't fight it. Reminded me pre-season, even under a brand new manager, tells you jack shit.

Yeah, there's far too much overthinking around these games from fans.

Iro the transformation from Kloppo's heavy metal football to this new style under Slotto I must say I was hugely impressed. Specifically at just how adept and confident the lads looked after only a handful of training sessions.

It augers incredibly well for the new season if that's our baseline. The players and our new coaching team should take some great credit and confidence from how far they've progressed in so little time.

It doesn't mean he always will though, it may have been down to the squad he had at previous clubs etc. These analysis videos etc online generalise a bit too much.

Fair enough comments from VDB. Looked solid last night. I don’t think he’ll be VVD 2, more an old school throwback of a defender.

Depends what we want to do, do we want a 4th / 5th choice or do we want somebody to seriously challenge the existing options?

Completely agree with that.

The biggest knock which could be levelled at VDB on last night's showing is that his passing was risky as fuck, especially in those really tight and deep areas (matron!), but it seems to be how Slot wants us to play. No doubt we'll concede some painful self inflicted goals this season due to that and I dread to see Gomez and Konate trying to play that way.

Yeah, it did feel needlessly risky at times, we’ve played a similar war for years, it should be adaptable reasonably quickly, I’d hope.

I thought the Betis press was pretty good, they were certainly making us work hard to get out and most of the time we did. Teams don’t often come as high against us because they are wary of Trent or VVD pinging one over everyone (we also didn’t have the necessary runners last night).

Not making excuses, it was the same for both teams, although the pitch wasn’t bad, it certainly was as slick as were used to and I certainly think there were some heavy legs from all the  training. Quite a few under hit or over hit passes.

Overall, as Slot said, a few promising signs, a number of areas to work on.

Thought Sepp did reasonably well last night, Betis were pretty sharp in their press and got at us very high quite often in the first half when our back 4 and keeper had the ball so at times it was a little kamikaze and some nervy play, not only by him.

& comes across as a cool, calm young man. Can't knock a player that wants to play which he emphasised a few times in this mini clip from an interview he gave after the game.

Think one was wider and one cut in to make a second attacker, have to see what happens when we have a focal point for them to play off.

It's not going tobbe for the feint of heart early on, first minutes if the game last night they were passing across the 6 yard box.

Also a few occasions when the third man passing went awry because players got too close to each other on the first pass.

I know Gordon should have scored, this was a definite penalty…

That's what's now known as The Pickford Push. It's been accepted by all refs as a legitimate piece of goalkeeping, so long as it's followed by an air punch, a twitch and a shout.

I'd be looking forward to see him closer to goal but listening to Slots presser he said he played with 2 number 10s because there was no forward available you'd think if it was in his thoughts then Salah would of played there. I'm guessing if we buy a right winger it will be a young understudy to Salah so not a big buy. He said Szloboslai and Elliot will play as 10s through out the season, so Mac allister will be deeper?

Unless we buy a world class 6, I think Mac has to play in that double pivot. Endo simply doesn't have the technical ability to play the way Slot requires. You have to have someone (ideally both) with top class technical ability and press resistance there, or we will be turning the ball over constantly.

Just looking at the line ups for arsenal and united for their game tonight, both have much

stronger and more experienced teams than anything we can muster at the moment.

Again I know it's preseason but we don't want to be shipping a heavy defeat  to either of those cunts when we play them over the next week.

I realise that these games were probably agreed last year but it's come at a very poor time for us, given the change in manager and the number of players we had going deep into both the euros and copa

Gonna be even more embarrassing for them then when they get shown up by a bunch of kids. Redcafe especially will make for popcorn viewing. Couldn’t lay a glove on Rosenborg, what are they gonna do to us? Worrying they’re going to hammer us because they’ve got the world class trio of Rashford Mount and Diallo while we’ve got championship players in Mo Jota and Szobo isn’t how football works.
