Italy, can’t recommend beaches as I’ve not done those, but the Lakes have lots of options with swimming and  ‘beaches’ Garda is full of options.

Thye best beaches are in Sardegna and Calabria. Puglia has some lovely ones on the south coast too.

Walking in the mountains in Alto Adige/Tyrol is marvellous - picture perfect scenery and plenty of places for food and beer. If you like hiking then this is paradise. (The photo is of Renon - a plateau at 1500m north of Bolzano)

I'd echo Tallinn. Went in winter and was lovely.

Taormina, Tropea and Syracuse are all nice, if you like Italy.

Thinking of going for 4 nights over Christmas.

Any recommendations?

Croatia is not blessed with many sandy beach resorts, but if you can live with stone beaches or a quay side with rocks then there are plenty to consider. It would depend on other criteria though, whether you’ll get a hire car, can do an onward ferry, age of kids etc

I’d choose Split over Dubrovnik, plenty in the city to keep you going, some great coastline. Trogir is good for a smaller town and close to Split and the airport. Okrug Gornji has a decent beach and walkable to Trogir

Zadar is good with some good resorts and beaches near Zaton to the north. Likewise Pula

Island wise, Havr, Brac are good, I prefer Korcula, it’s a 4hr ferry from Split though. Lumbarda on Korcula is quiet and has probably the best sandy beach in Croatia, not sure I’d drag my kids there as it’s a long journey and the town is limited for kids stuff, but nice fishing and great windsurfing etc.

Montenegro, Kotor is a good, Budva was nice but full of Russians. I liked Ulcinj in the south near the Albanian border but not sure that would be your thing

Italy, can’t recommend beaches as I’ve not done those, but the Lakes have lots of options with swimming and  ‘beaches’ Garda is full of options. Pescheria Del Garda the most obvious, we took our lads there last year, drove down, stopped in Germany and Switzerland, the Dijon on the way back. Having the motor really opened it all up.

Were driving again this year and doing a week near Saarbrucken then a week in Berchtesgaden this summer

Anything to do in Pula? How would you spend a week there if travelling with the family?

I spent a week there in 2018, with a 3 and 1 year old.

We stayed at the Park Plaza. We did a couple of relaxing days at the pool and coast around there.

By memory we visited the amphitheater, the city, aquarium and went out to Rovinj for a day.

we were limited by having young kids and one in a push chair at the time. So had to limit what we could do. But the kayaking looked good and there’s always boat trips and island hopping etc

Cheers, sounds like the info I have found covers most of it then.

Park Plaza is one of the places we have looked at by the way.

I loved Pula, met a fit Swiss miss on the beach when she farted and we laughed at her, subsequently visited her in Bern 3 weeks later. Got a nasty jellyfish sting on the shoulder which left a cool scar for a couple months. Ice cream, pizza and beer was ridiculously cheap and could be ordered on the beach. The amphitheatre that dominates the centre of town is cool, would be good to catch a concert there. Met my mate for an interrail trip that I had already started and he was adamant he was going to be faithful to his bird. First night he got a gobble from a chubby yank. I appreciate these exact scenarios might not happen to you but it'd be fun to find out

It was the Park Plaza Verudela that we visited. We stayed in one of the modern apartments rather than the hotel or the older bungalows. To be honest I can’t remember a great deal about the place now.

But it was set in nice grounds, the on-site shops and restaurants etc were limited, but I don’t remember anything particularly bad about the place.

The pools weren’t exciting for kids, but mine being so young were happy and didn’t expect slides etc. both pools were clean and had a good terrace that was raised and looked out to the coast.

It was probably quite a walk to the city centre, so imagine we must have got a bus, but I can’t remember now
