Injuries being an affliction notoriously unique to us.

If i have a car that has broken down so buy another one, and then get rid of the one that doesn't work I don't buy a second car because at one point I had two.

We purposely ran heavy on midfielders because we had two that continuously missed huge amounts of the season in a team that relied on the midfield doing lots of the leg work.

We now ask less of at least two of the midfielders in the 11 and are running at a more standard 7 midfielders instead of the 9 we carried because two were perma crocks.

Absolutely an argument to be had over replacing individuals/improving quality in that 7 though.

At the end of the day it is what it is but personally I think it was a disappointing transfer window. But I'm not going to lose my shit over till mid November when we have 6 injuries and are having to name the tea lady on the bench along with a couple of talented pre school toddlers to make up the numbers.

The point is that they didn't get on the pitch, so we're not weakened by their departures.

We were already weakened by their existence. And the 14 games matip played last season did matter, because he was fucking brilliant and it was the period of the season we where our results were at their best.

Bobby Clark also manager 6 PL appearances (although little more than 90mins in total) starting 1. He had another 7 appearances in the cups, so 13 in total. So him and matip, that's 27 appearances. Both are gone.

The season before bajcetic played 11 times in the league and another 8 in the cups. He's also gone.

Even if the contributions are small, they're still contributions. In fact without Clarks contribution, we may not have won our only trophy.

If I have a car that is broken down? What are you talking about? This isn't the wacky racers. It's elite level sport.

I actually think we may not get as many injuries as we did under Klopp purely because of the way we play, but it's still gross negligence to not have cover in place.

Sterling to Arsenal?! Haha I'm buzzing about that. Hope he gets loads of game time because he's so shit it's unbelievable.

Are there any fans of his former clubs who remember him fondly, or do we all fucking despise the greedy useless little shitcunt?

The owners and the recruitment team have taken a huge risk in this window.

Other than the possibility that the players that remain could actually improve and dovetail very nicely with Slot's ideas, we have question marks over depth. Can we also be sure that things will be much better on the injury front?

We don't need to stockpile players like Chelsea, and the young players who did so well last season certainly need game time to step up another level, but the schedule will be pretty busy up to the end of January at least, because there are 2 more games in Europe, a format that brings a different pressure in the sense that your chances of progress to the knockouts are not in your own hands. There's the League Cup where we've been drawn against Premier League opposition again, and the 3rd and possibly 4th rounds of the FA Cup. That's all on top of playing half the league fixtures. I think there's plenty of minutes there for a deeper squad.

Signing a goalkeeper for next season, plus a forward for a position we aren't exactly short of numbers in, is not a productive transfer window.

More than that is the lack of contract renewal activity. You could get away with that with perhaps one key player every couple of years, if you are seeing signs of tailing off or decline and you've planned ahead by either having someone in the squad ready to step up or a new arrival lined up, but to potentially have 3 key players with contracts running out means there is uncertainty going forward, and any replacements will be both expensive and need to hit the ground running.

His pace when Arsenal might need a goal late, could win them a few points. They paid no loan fee, and are covering under half of his wages. Sterlings' stock has fallen (rightfully), but I think he could be a really useful player for them.

Important to remember that this transfer window is the first one fully run by the so called "nerds" on top. No powerful Klopp to protect his players and his team.

It's quite clear this window has followed some special formula: Max 2 decent players needed for each position (best case naive, worst case season ruining), no backup signings if the priority signing didnt turn out (Zubimendi debacle), and an extreme need to either sell or loan out any decent fringe players: players that can do a job if needed (like Bajetic, Doak, Clark, Philips, etc) when our made of paper players get into their groove (Jones, Konate, Gomez, Jota, etc).

All this means: Yes this might work out on a spreadsheet somewhere in nerd land, however based on the last seasons, with all the injuries woes, lack of form, games every 3-4 days, and general shit happening throughout a season, I would summarize this plan as absolute fucking shambles and I am very worried how this season will pan out.

If we look at our squad from last season, knowing about the injuries to Matip and Thiago, and compare it with this season, I would argue we have a better squad now with the addition of Chiesa.

My reasoning would be this.

1. Quansah and Bradley can now be seen as regular first team players, based on their quality, appearances and experience from last season.
2. The young players we have sold will be replaced with new young players, its not like those spots are empty.

3. Tyler Morton is back with much added experience from first team football after very good loan spells at Blackburn and Hull, Im certain he will get more game time than Clark did in the league last season.
4. Endo is now used to the pace of the PL, Elliott is one year older and finally have had an injury free season behind him and Szoboszlai have also got that one year of PL experience under his belt.

5. We have brought in Chiesa, a player who can cover every position in attack and he can also play in reguler midfield.

The only thing I dont really understand with this window is how we identified a central midfielder as a priority with the bid of Zubumendi, but then did not follow it up with a signing in that position when that deal fell through.

We were the best team in the league for long periods last season, only the last few months did we fall behind after the injury to Salah.

I dont think its so bad as many are trying to make us believe.

I like the perspective, but also feel we've left ourselves with some significant risks considering the number of games ahead.

Not active problems, not a dearth of talent, just risks.

Let's not forget when we get a few injuries and having to play 16 year old, people will be saying, well no one could have predicted this and why didn't you say something earlier.

Guaranteed that when that inevitably leads to shit performances and defeats, the players and coaching staff will be getting pulled up but not FSG and Edwards who created the situation in the first place.
