He hasn't looked anything special though has he?

Probably makes more sense to sell him if we can than let him leave at the end of his contract.

No he hasn't. But I think most of the kids haven't. They've come in, looked tidy, know how to run about, can take a touch and move the ball - but these are minimums I think, they should all be able to do that. Obviously quansah and Bradley have been exceptions , but they've both succeeded on the back of good loans. But ultimately for those left in the U23s or whatever the level is now, they have fixtures to fulfill and they needs lads to play with! Even forgetting what they can and can't bring to the 1st team, the lads coming through who may have the talent to make it all the way through, will benefit from being in a stronger side.

I'm ok with us selling these kids, it just feels like there's something else at play here with this quite sudden move on so many of them around the 1st team. It can't possibly be because we need the money, as we've not spent any and the wages bill has been lowered. All I can think is Slot and the data team don't rate them, but think there's kids in behind who have more chance of making it and they want to clear the decks for them.

Being a liverpool fan in a transfer window is like going to a student house party and being fat. The best you can hope for is a sniff of an art student's hair while she brushes past you on the way to the kitchen for a bottle of Hooch, then it's back home for a pot noodle and a wank while all the other lads are getting their weasels greased. And believe me, I know.

One thing i will say about selling young players is that it's probably better for some of them than hoarding them here and them only playing at a low level.

It's ridiculous that someone like Nat Phillips is still here at 26 years old.

Even with the likes of Bobby Clark, it may be that after having a taste of top level football he doesn't fancy another year of mostly youth team football.

The chance to regularly play for a top club in another league under a coach he knows  well must appeal to him.

I'm definitely not against selling young players - the academy's job is to produce lots of quality young players, where hopefully they go on to be good enough to play lots of games for the club. And if they don't, we have a duty (imo) to ensure they're equipped to have as good a career as their talent will take them elsewhere. So selling kids is definitely part of the story and it feels to me (and to the point @dave u has mentioned inglethorpe has said it's almost impossible to pick them), that it's a pure numbers game no matter how good your academy is.

But what is starting to feel strange is how many of them were in the good bucket and they're suddenly in the see you later bucket. Surely this can't just be down to Slot's eye? Because I would expect us to more data dependent on these decisions. So I wonder what else has changed - there might be an agenda change, where they want to make calls earlier so we don't end up with some players for too many years, but when Edwards was last at the club, he seemed happy to give the lads lots of chances, with loan after loan.

So far based on nothing other than absolute conjecture speculation and outright bullshit. Hughes seems very shit at his job, very shit..spread the word far and wide Hughes is shit at his job.

I'm getting a tingle for a last gasp mega money bid for a player we have no chance of getting followed by conciliatory contract renewals.

It will be some boost for the squad morale when that signing is complete. Some of them won't be able to contain the excitement. The 3 boys nearly out of contract won't be looking at it as in indication the club are willing to let Ali walk out the door for free. I've already ordered the keepers top he'll never wear from DHgate.

The Transfer DealSheet: Latest on Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona and more - The Athletic (nytimes.com)

Ornstein linking us with Guehi

Guehi is appreciated by other sides in the Premier League, including Liverpool. They are looking at centre-back options in case both Joe Gomez and Sepp van den Berge leave. They also know Virgil van Dijk has entered the last 12 months of his contract and there has been no fresh news about a renewal.

As it stands, though, Newcastle are the only suitor to enter meaningful talks. That makes Guehi the one to watch this week, especially considering the transfer deadline looms large and there is a need for a resolution one way or another.

Liverpool
What has happened this week?
Liverpool held talks with Valencia over a possible deal for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Spanish club value the 23-year-old Georgia international at around €45million (£38.4m; $49.9m).

Their interest in Mamardashvili is about long-term succession planning, however. They aren’t looking to recruit a ’keeper for this season. Even if a fee can be agreed, he wouldn’t arrive at Anfield until 2025 or 2026. Alisson’s status as Liverpool’s No 1 is not currently under threat. Possible loan options for Mamardashvili have been discussed. Bournemouth have shown interest but Premier League rules do not allow Liverpool to buy him then loan him straight to the south-coast club.

As the wait for the first signing of the Arne Slot era continues, Liverpool agreed a fee of around £10million with Red Bull Salzburg for midfielder Bobby Clark. The 19-year-old England youth international has been given permission to travel to Austria to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical. Liverpool have also negotiated a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause.

Fellow youngster Luca Stephenson, 20, has headed to Scotland’s Premiership, joining join Dundee United on a season-long loan.

Why have Liverpool not pursued another No 6?
When top target Martin Zubimendi turned down a move to Anfield and opted to stay at Spain’s Real Sociedad, Liverpool insisted they were unlikely to sign an alternative holding midfielder in this window.

Liverpool believe the 25-year-old Spain international was a rarity in terms of fitting the profile of what Slot wants in a No 6 and they were also under the belief that he was 1) available and 2) wanted to join them. It remains to be seen if Liverpool’s stance changes before the deadline at the end of next week.

“It’s not easy to find players who can help us or strengthen the squad,” Slot said. “Zubimendi was one of them, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have.”

Ryan Gravenberch impressed after being handed the No 6 role in Saturday’s season-opening win over Ipswich Town but tougher tests than Kieran McKenna’s promoted side line ahead. Slot wants a ball-player rather than a combative-type in that position. Last summer’s signing Wataru Endo, who was an unused substitute at the weekend, has slipped down the pecking order.

What positions/players are they looking at?

Internal discussions have been had over defensive options since Joel Matip left when his contract expired at the end of last season.

Recruiting an attacking wide player has also been a topic of debate.

Liverpool agreed a £75million fee with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon in late June, with Joe Gomez poised to move in the other direction for £45m. However, those deals collapsed when Newcastle pulled out. Liverpool’s admiration for Gordon remains strong but Newcastle are no longer under financial pressure to sell to satisfy the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Which players could be leaving?

Gomez’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain after Slot left him out of the 20-man squad for the trip to Ipswich.

The club’s longest-serving player, Gomez is considering his options with interest from several Premier League clubs. His versatility has been a big asset, but he now finds himself behind Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate at centre-back, while Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas are the understudies for full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Luis Diaz has been linked with Barcelona all summer but Slot is adamant the Colombian winger is going nowhere.

It promises to be a busy end to the window in terms of outgoings, as Liverpool consider offers for players such as Nat Phillips, Sepp van den Berg, Ben Doak and Tyler Morton, while Kaide Gordon, Stefan Bajcetic and Owen Beck have been attracting loan interest.

I’d agree, if I thought Hughes job was to improve the squad.

However, there’s very little evidence to suggest that’s what he’s been brought here to do.

mmmmm.... we only want a centre half if BOTH gomez and VDB go?

the way this summer is going, no signings, sell offs, no new contracts to players .... you can't help but think this is cost control and the club is in the process of being sold and we're clearing the decks to make the club look more manageable from a running costs perspective and potentially a clean slate for new owners to go in whatever direction they want.

Yeah it does look very much like that.

It might have also been a factor in Klopps decision to go.

i wondered if it was all driven by this boston celtics business. preiously their aim had been to have a team in vegas and bring in le bron with them and the money people around him. i wonder if they go the celtics route, they lose le bron, so need new investors or sell one of their assets. they know where the value of the club sits after last years failed attempt to sell. they'll know who was interested. i don't know - it just something seems really different and it can't be down to Slot and Hughes.

It definitely feels like a wage wind down to grease the wheels of a sale.

Despite big wages for Trent/Virgil/Mo we only have less than a year of exposure to this on the books, which explains why we haven't even opened talks with them on a new deal.

While the financial landscape of football remains like the wild west, we are big game for Arab states and there's only so long FSG can hold out.

Our spine is getting old, Ali is 32 in October, Virgil is 33, Mo is 32.

That's 3 major signings needed shortly.

Trent seems likely to go, and Robbo is 30, it seems like both starting full back positions need big investment, even with Bradley coming through.

But then next summer we'll be left with 1 year on contracts for Robbo, Konate and Kelleher.

If the first few years of FSG felt well planned for success on the pitch, this now feels well-planned for success off the pitch.

One of my biggest concerns is that the onus on analytics means we're projecting team performance and they've decided we aren't competing so may as well let some contracts go to rebuild.

Makes no sense with Trent, but might for Salah, Virgil and Allison. Hopefully not, would be a pathetic move, no place for that kind of US sport management in football as there's no guarantee of getting the talent back in. It would be every bit as stupid as Bo-Lee's mess at Chelsea.

I don't understand the plan for resale either, as it would only lead to a drop in value as we'd drop out of relevance to younger audiences pretty quickly.

I think coming back onboard to get everything ready for a sale wouldn’t be in Gordon’s interest. I know his new role is different, but he had other offers at clubs who actually buy players.

I’ve no reason to believe the Zubimendi move wasn’t sincere, though badly handled. Just get the next on the list in.

I’ll be shocked if we don’t bring in a couple of players, with Gomez going the other way.

Any two from a centre half, a defensive/playmaking midfielder and Gordon.
