Players need regular games, is what it basically boils down to. If Wharton for example had left Blackburn and joined a club with either a deeper squad or a manager who had no idea what to do with him, he wouldn't have developed that way he has at Palace.

For those suggesting he's a player we've "missed out on", who is the next Wharton that might be ready for the step up, and have you suggested it already?

It's took Eze and Olise a good 18-24 months to show they are of the required level of a top 4/6, club. We aren't the club to be developing that. Maybe we could sign players and loan them out but then you start limiting the loans for your own academy players and it's max 7 loan out this year and I think it drops again next year.

Before last season Olise had 4 goals in 63 apperances

Exactly.

The sensible thing is to let them go to a Palace, West Ham or Bournemouth level team then sign them.

It's what we did with Van Dijk, Mane, Gini etc

Obviously they will cost a lot more but its worth paying a premium as you know they can handle the Premier league.

Unless you get a chance to get them cheap, like we did with Harvey and carvalho, who can then join on then cusp of youth and 1st team football, then we don't really want these types of projects and look for players higher up the food chain, because we need to buy players to come in and make a difference and be capable of playing in champions league finals and stuff like that. We simply don't have the opportunity to give these boys the chance they need. Our equivalent of a Wharton signing would be Ryan gravenberch, that's as close as we get.

This of course might change once we have a multi club model - but that mightn't have suited a lot of these players discussed here. The reality is players like Wharton are just none of our business as they'll never get the games to develop that they do at palace, Brighton etc.

That might be true, but the point stands that if someone makes the point of making the Championship a market of interest, it probably isn't that hard to scout there. It's in your own country and you probably have far more insight and certainty than for other places.

Supporters wouldn't accept it in the vast majority of cases either, if we signed Olise and Eze from Reading and QPR/Reading and then said we're not buying top players because in 3 years they'll be ready and we need to make sure the pathway is clear you'd have uproar.

It takes buy in on the process and patience for them to develop which you don't get at a top club.

The standard of the Championship is probably about the 8th or 9th in Europe though. Its a massive step to go from that level to a Champions league level Premier league club.

A lot of money has gone on Brathwaite to Liverpool, making us favourites to sign him.

Imagine the atmosphere at the Pit when we win the last derby at the woodshed with Braithwaite scoring a header and Gordon winning a late pen for a 2-0 win

There's uproar all the time about everything, it doesn't make one jot of difference to what the club wants to do.

this could cause us more problems that it would solve.  Konate would almost certainly up sticks, and Quansah would give it a year (assuming VVD signs another contract).

If we signed Braithwaite then Virg is likely off at the end of the season. Edwards would probably view it as a price worth paying long term. Gomez fee, Virg wages off the books.

Reports on line have Gomez and Virg on around 300k a week combined. Massive saving on wages and two thirds of a fee covering him coming in.

It's perfect for them really.

It's all bollocks though, Sky bet being the cunts they are, start a rumour, ramp it up and take the profit

I don’t think you can tell much about how a defender from a team who defend deep and rely on last ditch tackles etc would fit in to a team who play a higher line and a more assertive, on the front foot defensive style.

But, even with that in mind, I thought that Greaves looked decent for Ipswich yesterday. Might be one to keep an eye on this season, to consider for next season.
