Summer 2024 Transfer Thread

I reckon Ian Doyle knows fuck all and all those words do is buy Hughes some more time to get Trent's contract sorted. With no new players coming in, it's obvious the noise will turn onto those running out of contract and the player who's getting the most focus is Trent with all this Madrid and Bellingham chat. Honestly, people talk (and report) around all this like it's 1924, not 2024. Are we seriously supposed to believe Trent has spent the last 2 months hiding in hotels without phone access and internet access? And does anyone believe he attends any meeting over his contract renewal? It's absolute fucking nonsense. Trent doesn't have a new contract because we haven't done enough to get him to sign one. He's already a massive earner and will likely want more this time. We could have done this deal a year ago if the will was there. We're here because it wasn't and they just hoped the local boy would sign up and be quiet.

Disagree.

The narrative from the start has been "oh my, what a talented squad Klopp has left for him", but that's an awful assessment of the situation imo.

The likes of Trent/Virg/Mo wanted new contracts for the past 6 months, had Klopp stayed then those 3 would have been boxed by the end of the season.  They waited because they didn't know who was coming in, the club weren't even sure who was coming in, it was mid season and candidates had to tread a fine line between making their interest known to us but also wanting to be respectful to their employer and fans of their clubs, and also not derailing the confidence of players as there were still trophies up for grabs in their respective countries.

So now we have a manager, but he can't get near his key players to judge their appetite for taking part in his plans, so he can't make a decision on those contracts.

How can Hughes deliver options to him when he hasn't had a chance to work with these players and determine weaknesses in his system?

Again, it's not like most clubs.

Slot isn't bringing his own talent spotters with him, he's the coach, that's the model we're operating, and to further complicate it we're bringing in Hughes from scratch, everyone is finding their feet, it's a mess.

We also can't judge a lot of the squad based on last season because so many of them are so young that they develop rapidly as they grow, we saw that with Quansah and Bradley, in a matter of my months they went from 'kid' to 'lad', it all fell into place.  Slot is, rightfully, going to look very closely at the immediate term and short term development potential of Danns, Nyoni, Doak, Clark, Chambers, Gordon, Kone-Doherty, McConnell, Beck, Koumas, Cannonier, all need consideration.

But on top of that is the more senior young contingent of Van den Berg, Bajcetic, Elliott, Morton, Carvalho, again they're at that age where development can accelerate or stagnate.

How much time did Slot realistically have to do that?  No point in looking at tapes of last season, it's not enough data and too much time has passed anyway.

We could argue the Euros has helped give him a better chance to assess these lads, but it will be at the expense of training time with the senior players.  Not his fault though.

My expectations are in the dirt.  I'll be impressed if the media don't fall into 'crisis' mode by October, but even if we do it'll be way too early to judge him.  We'll just have to dig in and wait.

This coming season is for me one of transition - we won't fully know what the 'new' post Klopp Liverpool looks like until next season when Slot and his team has had time to look properly at what and who he wants, who he does not and of course the players who are likely to leave leave.

It is really lousy timing having to make all the changes we have and still likely need to in such a messed up summer - but that is nobody's fault really....Klopp made his decision and we as a club have had to play hand been dealt as a result.

Hopefully Slot is a good enough coach to get decent results out of what he is inheriting without being able to properly shape it and can somehow get a team that will barely have had a week or so of pre-season together properly to start the season with some sort of idea.

As the season progresses he can hopefully start to make sense of it all and you'd like to think that we'll act in Jan in terms of him starting to build his team and next summer we'll act early and decisively and then have a full and proper pre-season to properly put it all together.

Kante is too old. We shouldn't be conditioned to just accept the cheapest "he can do a Job" type players because the owners lack ambition if it costs a penny. I look at  Arsenal and they now look like a club thats aggressively ambitious in it's desire to win the Premier league, we give off the impression the owners are happy to hedge their bets on a top 4 place.

Hopefully there's some Fabinho type shenanigans going on and we can enter the season with a buzz. The club needs it, I'm tired of us being the elite paupers to the point even the fans show zero ambition when it comes to suggesting players because we know realistically we won't spend what it takes. More than likely without Klopp without the desire to compete in the market we won't compete in the league and if this season is one without desire how do we keep the quality we currently have, will Trent sign a new contract if he sees the club is on the same path that Gerrard dealt with.

We don't even have to go mad, just a couple of genuine first team players, players where its instantly recognisable they are part of the first 11 for the next few years. No shitting the bed on a player over a 2 million in difference valuation fee because we dictate what the market is and database says that's financially closer too risk than our perimeters usually allows. Just think about the fucking team first occasionally and do what needs to be done even if its done with a grimace.

FSG were cheap bastards with the best manager in the world at the helm, there's less than zero chance they will loosen the purse strings for his unproven replacement.

We've been in training two weeks, Slot will have seen the younger players at first hand now. Some will have been sent back to their respective age groups.

He knows he's got several first teamers to come in and he'll know all about what those lads can do and offer.

If he doesn't he's been hiding under a rock the last few years

Decisions will now surely be taken on who needs to be sold or loaned etc and what positions we target. I don't accept that this should be a transitional season of trying to make top 4. The players are better than that level of ambition.

We need two or three quality additions that is for certain. And Trent needs a bumper new deal.

Mo and Virgil also need extending. We need to keep the experienced players in the squad.

Remember him giving the Dutch a torrid time and having a pretty lively Euros as a whole, Saw a comment from a guy that claims to follow Turkish football say that he and some guy called Kilicsoy are 2 of the best talents in the league, that Gala fans love him, very athletic player with an incredible work rate and that last season he played in 5 different positions (CF, RW, LW, RB and LB) so in that respect 7 goals and 12 assists last season isn't too bad.

That's where the Gareth Bale comparisons were coming from at the end of June when us, Spurs, Brighton and Arsenal were linked then, he's played full back winger and forward.

Not sure another 1 goal in 8 games winger is what we need. He was a sub in most of Galatasaray European games, kept out of the team by Tete,Zaha and Ziyech.

Nowhere near good enough

Turkish super lig

79 games 10 goals, 9 assists.

Champions league

7 games, 0 goals, 2 assists

Europa

5 games 0 goals 1 assist

Salah and van Dijk can both go next summer. They will probably still be of the required level this season, but after that? Really doubt it.

Sounds like someone is trying to drum up interest in him then.

Just watched an 8-minute highlight clip on Youtube and it might be the worst one I've ever seen. Assaidi had more exciting youtubes than this lad, half the video is just Yilmaz receiving a pass, turning, and passing it back to the midfield successfully.

Probably means he's brilliant, to be honest - there seems to be an inverse relationship to the quality of the highlight videos and the actual play of the player.

You might find this one of his end product a little better.

That reputable carrier of insightful sport, teamtalk, is linking VVD with a move to Saudi. It goes on to claim we've asked for 55m euros. Which obviously is a weird number for an English club to ask from a Saudi club. The thing here though, while these lads don't sign new contracts, there'll be loads of unsettling stories. The weird thing is how little noise there is around Salah.

Back in the day you'd have to pay £300 and get a shoeing off your parents when they got the phone bill with club call all over it for that kind of bollocks.

Salah stuff went really quiet last time as well then all of a sudden he'd signed.

Haha, yeah and there was some shit and they took about 10 minutes to get to the bit you wanted to hear. I can't recall quite how much they charged in those days, but I bet pound for pound it wouldn't be much different to premium rate numbers today. I remember trying to go to the phone box to do it, I couldn't get the money in quick enough.
