I'd be surprised.

Quote

"They had to end the season and I don't think I would be really happy if my successor would have called players before I left the club.

"Then I think it's normal to start with the captain, which is Virgil [van Dijk] - which is an easy one for me because we could speak Dutch.

"I called a few others, but not many of them because most of them are playing at the Euros, and some others are at the Copa America.

"The best way is to keep a certain distance but also be interested in them as well, and hope most of them - especially the Dutch - will still be as long as possible away so they will reach the final.

"Then afterwards I will get to meet them and I think that's a better way of getting to know each other than by phone or Zoom meetings."

I wouldn't sell anyone. The squad wasn't big enough last season. So I'd replace the 2 players who left at the end of last season. If we replaced them with players who could get on the pitch, the squad might just not get over stretched.

Also, we have more games than ever. Guaranteed 8 games in the CL, if we finish 9-24th, we get another 2 games. So I think that creates an argument to add another forward.

We make 5 subs a game, so I would expect to use 5 forwards and 5 midfielders in each game. We have 8 defenders, 6 midfielders (unless you're foolish enough to count bajcetic) and 5 forwards. That's before anyone is injured.

For me we have 5 forwards. Am I happy with those 5 after last season, no.  Would I entertain Gordon for Diaz, fucking no. Would you bin Nunez? Getting rid of Salah our only real constant goal source under a new manager is crazy. So defence. I'm happy with it. I'd get rid of Tsimikas for somebody to take Robbo's place, that's it. Then it's midfield. We can talk about that for sure.

Do you reckon if he has spoken to him that he's had a full discussion on where they each see his role next season or just exchanged pleasantries and platitudes about how much they're looking forward to working with each other given he was on England duty at the Euro's?

I'm sure they could have had that conversation. Trent didn't train 24 hours a day, I'm sure he had access to a laptop to get on a call. And if they haven't now, they should. And if they still can't, Slot knows what he wants, just fucking do what you think is right. If Trent doesn't like that and throws a strop, he can enjoy the bench till he fucks off to Madrid. There's just no need for this sitting on your hands shit. The players are here to serve the club, not the other way round.

We are desperate for a centre back imo. There's no guarantee quansah can hit his levels again of last year, he's young and they're up and down. Konate will always be injured. Gomez hasn't played centre half for the longest of time and he can't head a ball, which is a handicap both for his position and for set pieces, because we're pretty pathetic in the air.

Midfield without doubt we need a number 6. What type, well that depends on Slot, but I'm sure he knows what type he needs.

Forwards, I think they can all play better than last season and the one before. But I'm realistic enough to know if I am trying to make an argument to add one, the club has absolutely no intention, because we do the minimum. So that means we'd have to sell someone. But we're only doing that with the right money on the table. So again, all this Gordon, Diaz chat, makes no odds to me, if there's not 50m on the table for Diaz, he's not going, so nobody is coming in.

The fella we have been linked with is crap in the air though.

I agree centre half is a worry but I'm playing devil's advocate. I like Konate, I know you don't because of injuries. We aren't going to buy 2 players at 100m to plug those holes. I'm happy top of the pitch. Loads of options and let's see what Slot can do with them. So for me we need a class midfielder. By the way Klopp knew that as well, that's why he brought in Thiago.

If there were buyers, I'd sell konate in a heartbeat. 4 centre backs should be enough. Its not,  partly because he's one of them.

I don't see why we can't spend 100m to plug those holes in the team. We're not paupers. And it would be pretty unlikely whoever replaces thiago earns anything like what he did.

We need a CB, DM and forward.

I don't have doubts about Quansah but we need one more, I'd sell Konate as well.

I am surprised at how many fans are eager to get rid of Konate. I know he has injury issues, but he is still a growing lad, and if he can sort that out  I can see him being the best central defender in Europe in the next 18 months.

He's always injured mate. You can't establish a solid defence with unreliability.

It's not as much doubts about quansah, but more that anything can happen through that development phase, which he's undoubtedly still in..for me he's our current 1st choice with vvd. And I don't trust either of them behind him if he's struggling and needs taking out for a few games.

Growing lad? He's 25.

No, that fact though may point to the club not sharing that concern.

Or they're about as serious about that player (I don't even know who you're talking about btw) than they were about yoro, who was a generational talent last week apparently.

You don't think 25 is young for a top centre half ?

It cerrainly isn't "growing lad" territory for my money.

I'd concede that it isn't prime age for a centre half/top player.

The concern for me would be if you have been continually injury prone at this age it is likely it will continue - this isn't a kid suffering growing issues/adapting to 'big boys footy'

I'm just surprised that we are always so desperate to sign new players, and even more desperate to sell them again.

Konate has been here 3 years. He's never managed a run of games playing 3 times a week and the only time he's ever consistently available for a period is when he job shares with someone and plays once per week. He barely played for RBL for the 2 seasons before we signed him, as he had injury issues, much worse than he even has now. And he now only has 2 years left on his contract - so now is the time to shit or get off the pot. I wouldn't give him a new contract. I wouldn't let running his contract down devalue him while we try to find out if he can stop being a crock. There were plenty of links to PSG at the start of the summer which you assume is his agent working for a new contract. 3 years is enough, time to get rid.

Possibly not, but I think he will turn out to have a far better career than Quansah.

Big call that - i hope they are both boss and with us like, but not sure at all that Konate will end up with the better career of the two. He potentially has one big disadvantage for starters.

Again it's priorities. You seem to think we are Man City and 3 keepers didn't work so finally Ederson. Let's try 10 full backs, and 6 centre backs. It's nonsense. Fuck chasing them and Klopp already beat them anyway.
