I always thought the Van Den Berg signing was odd, when he first arrived it looked like he wasnt mobile enough, comically so, but Klopp and the team weren't idiots.

They wouldn't have identified and signed such a limited CB, it always made me think there was something we were missing.  Could be his parents were athletes and they knew he'd develop.

Could be he was experiencing growing pains and muscular issues when we first saw him.

Either way, I've not given up on him yet.

Yeah that's an interesting point, becayse he was slow as shit when he got those first team chances. It was the main reason I didn't think he had a chance. A few years later I'm reading that he's clocked the fastest speed of any defender in Germany.

Now I just want him gone because I don't like how he's run his mouth (more than once) and his miserable gob on the Inside Training videos annoys me.

The soundbites from Hughes about being 'opportunistic' in the transfer market and about doing most of the business in August the other week make me a bit worried.

Basically, we want bargains and players who haven't had preseason with us. Possibly leading to last minute panic decisions. Talks of crescendos of activity in August as being the normal state just doesn't seem how we've done things or good for team planning.

Hope I'm wrong but I have a really bad feeling about this season. We have known weaknesses that need filling and 3 big names whose contracts are rolling down.

With everyone already on a downer from Klopp going we need something to lift us and get us looking forward. I think the players probably need that too. Hopefully they're doing everything on the quiet but I am nervous about it.

Due to the global internet outage that has affected data systems in player analysis, Liverpool and their owners believe that the summer window of 2025-26 will be the best time to attack the transfer market. Thus they will set aside a warchest to spend big next year.

Not what he said, he was answering a question about the market in general and how the Copa/Euros will impact the market.

One of the biggest problems with twitter in particular (though it also happens with more traditional journalism) is the proliferation of context less quotes and how everything gets turned into single soundbites even if they're answers to specific questions or separate points.

OK lots of this gets incredibly boring so try and break it down.

If nobody gets sold where are we improving?

Would you give up any signings if Salah, Virgil and Trent got the money instead?

If we can do everything, where are we improving first?

And my favourite, where the fuck is Trent playing?

There's also a level of cognitive dissonance (not leveled at anyone here) in thinking clubs should only make transfers with the managers say so and then complaining that transfers haven't been done before a manager is able to assess the squad he has.

You're not getting paid to, he is, you're just bitching about it on the internet for free.

The whole point of the structure is that you have people at the club there who know what the squad needs and can make it happen. The guy coming over from the Eredivisie doesn't have to watch every single player in person before some decisions can be made.

Some of the conversation here is really weird, it's like we're the first team in the history of football who changed manager over a summer. If Slot hasn't got a clue at this point which positions he needs to strengthen the side, he should be jettisoned already. There's plenty of evidence, and more than you'd have on any new signing, on the players we have. Us not signing players at this point has absolutely nothing to do with the change of manager and everything to do with the club feels they spent their money last year and will only go in if someone is too cheap to be true.

Which would be a fair point had the entire back room staff not left and we had a newly appointed Sporting Director.

Hahaha. Who would you sell? We have 5 forwards. We have numerous defenders. So who do we sell to make room? We need a top class midfielder and a left back. The rest we go again unless you know something we don't?

There are people paid big money to answer all of these things. I get that they're new but they'll quickly fail in their jobs if they take too long to make decisions.

Any signings should be about improving the first eleven. Aside from in goal we could do that in every position in some way so it's about them judging priorities.

Personally, I think the midfield clearly isn't top class and our foward line isn't clinical enough. That's where I'd start.

As for Trent he either signs a new contract or fucks off this summer for me. He's too wasteful with the ball and poor on the half turn to play as a 6 so he's either a more advanced midfielder or needs to play right back. If it's right back Slot needs to get him to commit more when he's defending.  Again Slot's paid the money to make that decision and should have an idea already.

I wouldn't sell anyone. The squad wasn't big enough last season. So I'd replace the 2 players who left at the end of last season. If we replaced them with players who could get on the pitch, the squad might just not get over stretched.

Also, we have more games than ever. Guaranteed 8 games in the CL, if we finish 9-24th, we get another 2 games. So I think that creates an argument to add another forward.

We make 5 subs a game, so I would expect to use 5 forwards and 5 midfielders in each game. We have 8 defenders, 6 midfielders (unless you're foolish enough to count bajcetic) and 5 forwards. That's before anyone is injured.

That paragraph in itself opens up a massive number of questions all based around one player who isn't yet in the squad.

What if he doesn't sign a new contract and doesn't fuck off, if he plays as a #6 then we won't be buying a #6 but we might need a right back, if he plays as an #8 we might need a right back and a #6 but might not need another attacker, if he plays at right back we still need a #6 and an attacker.....

He's arguably the biggest single decision the club has and the club might not have any say on that decision.

You'd hope the manager has watched him play and spoken to him though.

Do you reckon if he has spoken to him that he's had a full discussion on where they each see his role next season or just exchanged pleasantries and platitudes about how much they're looking forward to working with each other given he was on England duty at the Euro's?

There might be tactical nuances that need more time but the topics of whether he wants to stay, where he wants to play and where Slot wants him to play don't need to be that detailed. It would be crazy to wait until 2 weeks before the season to have that conversation.

And it's something that could easily be fitted into a 30 minute conversation over a video call around whatever England were doing.
