Im confused. Were they hoping to get this 'Unique Market Opportunity' for less than the price of a 2021 Nat Phillips?

The second most expensive defender in our history is Konate at £36 million, so that seems to be our cap for spending on a new defender.

That's why publicly stating our interest made no sense. You have 4 centre backs already, you know he's going to cost a lot of money and you know ultimately he would prefer to sign for Real Madrid and Man United, another rich club,  are also in for him.

These are not factors that make the signing likely, why are you publicly announcing your interest before the fact?

Yep, such a stupid move then you try and brush it aside saying we already have the players and we didn't want to spend that much, fans wouldn't have cared if they hadn't been in the press telling everyone we really wanted him.

Ornstein confirming the initial fee is 62 million EUR rising to 70. I can see why Madrid weren't interested at that price as they weren't looking to spend more than 30 on him this summer from the sounds of it. I can also see why we wouldn't get involved at that price for an 18 year old centre back but if you're telling everyone that he's a generational talent and you're at the front of the queue if Madrid don't make it work then understandable why there are a lot of pissed off fans out there.

United have basically overpaid by about £25m to make sure they get him. Fuck knows how much they’re paying him but I dare say it’s enough to ensure that he’s set for life which is never a great motivator for an 18 year old.

Rumoured to be 200k a week.

It's just not helpful to spend £60m+ on a very young CB unless you're going to follow that up with a further £300m for other positions.

It's absolutely true that a top team starts from a strong defence, but it's the full backs who do the hard yards and are most at risk of breakdown.  If Yoro could, or was wiling to, also play as a full back then I would advocate for it. But even then, does Slot need Gomez esque full backs for his system, or does he need a Frimpong?  If Yoro can't attack well then I wouldn't want him.

If we didn't sign any defenders and all our lads stayed, I wouldn't have a concern with that.

However, I'm worried that Trent will either agitated for Madrid, or he'll use a new manager as a punctuation point for a new beginning as a midfielder and will refuse to play fullback.

"Hi Arne, I'm Trent and I play midfield, nice to meet you".

18 years old with one year left on his contract . If that is correct just remember Madrid were able to get one of the best players in the world to sit tight for another year and come to them on a free. If they were seriously interested they would have got him . Agent has played a blinder here.

I'd say he potentially a decent player but not even a position we need to strengthen right now . With the amount of shots they conceding this cub will be gun shy before Xmas.

Going off the amount of players we’ve signed recently where the so called “ITK” journalists didn’t have a clue about our interest until they’d signed, I don’t know why people still buy into these leaked quotes form anonymous club insiders.

Half of them are probably made up.

We do need to buy a couple of players though. Last season, the squad fell just short and we had a manager who is better (at the moment) than Slot is. It’s just silly to go into the following season without any additions.

Saying that, I’m not arsed about Yoro. It’s unlikely he’d start for us this season anyway. If he did, it could be quite the risk starting an 18 year old centre back, week in, week out, in a much quicker and more physical league than the one he’s experienced of.

If there’s silly money involved, I’d sooner see us spend that money on a forward. Maybe another wide option or a central striker who can hit a barn door or who isn’t injury prone.

Difficult to tell if the mancs are back to meaning serious business with this or they’ve just chucked a load of money at Yoro & Lille (ie significantly more than us or Real Madrid were prepared to pay) and it paid off for them?

Suppose proof will be in his appearances. Have the spent serious money on a seriously talented player or have they spent serious money on somebody bang average, again.

Who gives a fuck about this goofy looking kid?

I don't think a single fan would have cared about this kid if the club themselves hadn't been telling all of their friends in the media that we wanted him and thought he was one of the best players of his generation. Same with Bellingham, nobody would have batted an eyelid him moving to Madrid if the club hadn't been telling the world for a year that he was the main target.

I’m not sure how I feel about this transfer, I think I agree.

Signing for Madrid over us would have been disappointing but not unexpected. Unfortunately they are top of the footballing world food chain - most successful club, history of the worlds best players, great stadium, great city, great weather, always going to be challenging on all fronts - and apart from maybe Barcelona (pre-financial meltdown), everyone is playing for 3rd best.

After the narrative we’ve heard for weeks / months, it feels disappointing we’ve let him go to the mancs.

Do we feel it’s too much money? Too big a fee, wages more than we prepared to pay, higher payments to 3rd parties… all likely, like Bellingham, I’m sure we knew that was likely the story all along though.

I’m more disappointed than this than I was the Bellingham news, it was clearly evident 1 player wasn’t going to fix our midfield issues last season and despite signing 4, although certainly improved, I’m still unconvinced it’s actually fully fixed.

I refuse to believe we don’t have the money to compete with the mancs for Yoro, more a calculated decision not to. PSG were heavily linked with him and never followed up with their interest. If he’s a “generational talent” who would marshal our defence for c.15 years or somebody we could eventually sell for a big profit further down the line, surely it would be worth it?

Just on the BBC website and it says Chelsea have already spent £95m on six players. They've signed about 700 fuckin players in the last 5 years.

699 of whom probably never made more than 10 appearances.
