More than proving his value for what £16m buys these days.

Limited, but knows this himself. Still isn’t  afraid to play a decent pass forward either. He’d have been our best midfielder if we’d had him last season.

He’s going to get a yellow every game, which is fine once he doesn’t double up on them.

Yeah, he didn't like the attention he got from Hughes. I don't quite know what to make of him. He's at an age where we don't really have the time for him to find his feet.

I thought he was an upwards curve as he got used to our way of playing, but he - along with Diaz, Gravenberch and Nunez - was utterly abject today.

I meant to qualify my post by saying he was far from alone.

But a 4 year contract for him when he’s 30 seems totally mad.

He's got Milners job. Play with the kids in the early cup rounds and come on to break up play and kick people with 10 minutes to go. Wontvbe here past next season imo. It's a non HG spot that can be better used in tbe long run. Good Las decent pro but a squad player no more

I thought he did well last weekend against Fulham, but I've not been too impressed in the league otherwise. He's looked fine - in fact I would think at his level - in the Europa League.

He most certainly wasn't alone. The whole left side wasn't functioning today and he's more left than right sided as Trent pushes him cross field a bit. None of them helped each other.

At his age, I just feel there's unlikely to be much growth in what he can do. For all the improvement he can make with experience, he's likely.to.lose the other way as he physically ages. He's had a couple of good moments and maybe just the fact we've been able to save legs in cups is worth having him around. I'd prefer not to see him start too many league games, certainly away from home.

We will sell him at the end of the season or next for 5/10ml

Yeah this is likely I think.

His wages are probably reasonably low so if we end up spending 8-10m total net on him for a year of being a squad player and helping us rotate we'll probably see that as fair do's.

I thought he had a decent game yesterday before he came off.

His problem yesterday was that players kept passing to him when he had two or three Palace players on him, some really poor decision making for the centre backs mainly.

That's how we play though. In fact pretty much every team who plays out from the back. It's literally how you break the press. Draw players in and pass through them. His quality taking and moving the ball at speed just isn't there imo. It doesn't make him a bad footballer, it just means he's going to struggle a bit when the opposition makes him the victim of the press, which he's increasingly becoming.

I can see that but some of the passes to him yesterday were nothing short of suicidal. You'd need to be Maradona to get out of those positions.
