Have a Sonos 1 upstairs but I went the other way as TV is more valuable to me, so have an AV receiver with Dolby 5.1 and subwoofer. It runs everything and is superb. Richer Sounds are excellent for all this, got all that gear there plus my new TV a few years back,

  • 1 year later...

Just bought a Yamaha RS202D DAB/Bluetooth Stereo Receiver. Was looking for a amp for my turntable and spotted this. Came with a pair of Wharfedale Diomand 220 speakers.

Really good sound. Need to figure out the wiring as I'm no expert and want to try the bi wiring so will get some extra cables.

Lee, don't go bi-wiring, there's no real benefit.

Looking at your system there, this is how you should wire it:

Right speaker goes into right speaker input on that Yamaha amp (red to red + black to black). Left as per right, but into the left speaker input on the amp.

Your amp does not have a phono input - DO NOT connect your turntable into any other input (for now).

What you need here is a phono pre-amp to boost the line level of your turntable. Your turntable cartridge will most likely be 'moving magnet' (MM).

Here's one for £29 from Richer Sounds:

https://www.richersounds.com/fosi-audio-box-x1-black/

Plug your turntable into the MM input (red to red + white to white). Then get another phono cable and connect that from the 'output' into the 'In' section on the rear of the amp where it says 'Line' (number 3).

Put a record on and have the amp on low. Now select the input to phono and raise the volume - if it sounds fine, then good. if it sounds shrill, then you've connected it wrong.

The turntable has a pre amp.

Can I send you some pictures of how I've wired it in the next few days abd can you let me know if it's right?

First time I've bought a set up where I've had to wire it up

Sure - can you post the photos in this thread?

Yeah

I've got sound from the turntable. It's got a pre amp that on and plugged into chanel 1 on the amp. The speakers  I think it's all fine and working. Just read people saying to do the bi wiring so if it's not worth doing I wint bother

Speakers look to be connected up correctly, because you are using the link.

Does the speaker cable have a 'ridge' on one of the two 'legs'? If so, ensure that whatever colour speaker binding post (you can see that one has a red stripe) you have connected the 'ridged one into, you do that on the other speaker.

Make sure that you go from + speaker connector on the back of the amp, across to the red striped speaker connector.

Do not ever let that open bare wire on your speaker cable hit that connector strip on the right hand side. In fact, cut it back so that only a small amount of copper is revealed from the sheath.

Look for QED 79 strand speaker cable, as an upgrade, based on have spring clip terminals on the amp.

Also, that pre-amp switch on the turntable- is it switched on? If not, slide it across.

Plug the phono cable into the 'Line' section - the one marked 'In' in section 3 (you have it in section 1).

Switch the amp input to 'Line' (if it is named that), and have a listen.

I'm still using the same Technics amp, CD player and GE I had in 1990, and all still work perfectly. I've replaced the speakers with Mission LX2 and the turntable with a pretty standard audio-technica one. But I decided I was going to stop buying vinyl records as the cost was getting silly, and I think I have most of the older ones I wanted to replace anyway now. So with getting money back from selling The The tickets last month (a last minute operation prevented me from attending) and finally paying off my credit card, I bought a WiiM Pro Plus Streamer and an SMSL SU-1 DAC last month and I've got to be honest, together they're game changers. Amazon music unlimited hi-def steaming into the WiiM, which is then connected to the DAC via optical, then RCA from the DAC into the amplifier. The sound is pristine, to the point where I can't really see myself going back to physical media unless I see limited editions etc. of things I really want. For the outlay (£250 for the two), to me it's a no-brainer.

I borrowed the Wiim Pro Plus streamer off my mate for a few weeks a couple of months ago, hooked it up to my Arcam amp and Quad floorstanders up in loft, sounded fantastic. Cracking piece of kit.

When I have some loose change I plan to get a decently sized sub-woofer and add it to that system.

It sounded really good out of the box, just hooked up directly to the amp via RCA. But adding the DAC and an optical cable it then sounded truly incredible. I also tried Qobuz via a sub (i've now ended) and Tidal via a free trial and neither sounded anywhere near as impressive as the hi res files through Amazon Music Unlimited, hence why i ended the Qobuz sub.

Didn't know about this thread, this is what I asked in the geeky forum.

I only listen to music when I'm out walking now, when i had vinyl it was all the time but (apart from the theft below) just cant be arsed with Spotify as i jump from one thing to the next. I long to listen to Whats going on using vinyl.

Just paid my Spotify monthly, 79.98tl which works out at about £1.82!

Anyone decided to return/still got vinyl?

As much as I love Spotify(especially at the price here) I also hate it.

My vinyl days finished when a Daughters ex stole and sold my full collection from "This is soul" to Springsteen boxset. This after we'd paid for the cunt to move from London, put a roof over his head and fed him!

Anyway I long to return to vinyl and have been looking at what's out there in turntables. Bit disappointed with what I've seen. One review gave rave review on how good one was but listed 'lack of Bluetooth to rip the music from record!' Surely that defeats the object?

Yeah I have vinyl for a similar reason. I tend to skip sings and jump around artists when playing digital. I'll need a new turntable at some point but mines fine for now especially as I only paid £50 for it.

Pretty happy with what I've picked up so far nice mix of what I listen to. Just deciding at the moment whether to just keep Jazz and classical as digital or CD as if I'm listening to that I'm normally sitting back and relaxing and getting up every 20 mins to swap sides is a turn off

I'd love this but not for £1500 plus

Is that wish list or what you have?

The only time I have listened to Dark side was years ago coming home from Norwich away, pissed, fell asleep in the car and my mate who was driving had it on. Scared the shit out of me when I woke up! But funnily enough it's an album I would buy, but yea, not at that price.

I would deffo jump back in if I could get something decent here for £50.

I will never forgive the cunt who stole my collection

If you're getting back into it, it all depends on your budget. I can't have a set-up that I'd like due to money, space and more importantly two young kids. Mind you, they are both massively into music at the age of 2 and 7 from listening to records with me.

I made myself a unit recently, but I need to add to it soon. I have a pair of JVC bookshelf speakers, an Audio-Technica LP3 record player that has a built-in amp. I bought a Sony CD player 2nd hand for €40.

My wife bought me the turntable 18 months ago. It was an upgrade on what I had. So far I haven't had a single issue with it.

Buying records is bloody addictive. But it's brilliant to listen to albums properly again the last few years.20241116_234950.jpg

Nice one, don't think I've seen a more diverse collection of music!

Music for me was my life story.

When I was a kid I was in a shop on Wavertree road(Freemans) and found a 10 Bob gift voucher and bought 'This is Soul, my first album.
