What is it he's supposed to be doing? He's scored three goals in 37 league games so I'm assuming it isn't that. He doesn't appear to be particularly creative in tight areas. His work rate is good and he tracks back well, but he's obviously not a holding midfielder.

Posters under 35 who still give enough of a fuck about the sport to read articles from The Athletic and watch youtube tactics videos presented by people with questionable harddrives, what is he?

He has no composure in the critical moments. His end product isn't up to scratch at all & he is no Henderson/Wijnaldum/Fabinho when it comes to work off the ball, not even close.

He covers far more distance than Henderson ever did, and with a lot more sprints.

My God, he was dogshit. I can't figure out if he's fooled everybody into thinking he's this technical player or if he's just fallen apart with the ball at his feet over the last year. It's like watching Henderson play #10.

It's a good thing he can run, if he couldn't he might get a game in League 1, maybe.

His fbref page actually looks quite good, for what it's worth.

Told you he was crap. He’s just doesn’t have the mentality to be an elite premier league midfielder.

It's horses for courses. You will need Szoboszlai against the top teams not so much against a low block. He'll be suited against Arsenal for example who go man for man all over the pitch.

It doesn't have to be Dom that doesn't play either, we don't need a midfield 3 of Grav, Macca and Dom against teams giving us 70% of the ball, it could be any one of them dropping out.

He doesn't think quickly enough. None of our midfield do, but it's even more important in that position he plays and everything takes too long with him, he sees stuff just too late. I said it before the season started, but we have a midfield that was bought for a manager who expects completely different things from midfielders to the current manager. He's clearly a very good player, but he's going to struggle at home all season against teams who will sit deep and deny us easy passes and shots.

The guy has talent but he's just not very intelligent when he steps onto the pitch and even less so when he's got the ball at his feet. Running ability is there which is great but the mind can't keep up.

Comes across as a bit of a cocky, smug twat too when he wants to be. Booting the ball away at the end there which he really should've seen a 2nd yellow for and then giving the whole "yeah whatever" attitude. You're captain of your country ffs, don't be another Bruno Fernandes and wise up.

He was annoying me yesterday, he’s too casual. He needs to watch some videos of how purposeful Gerrard was with the ball, every pass was crisp, firm and at pace, Szoboszlai often just seems lax and too laid back.

I think he’s fortunate Elliott is injured. Chiesa not being on the bench was puzzling.

However, I didn’t think it’s fair to single out one particular player from yesterday, he wasn’t the only attacking player to have an off day - Diaz was really well defended by whoever their right back was (who had an excellent game), Jota was never in it, Nunez & Gakpo didn’t offer much and Salah had a stinker.

I choose to see it the other way around, I think both Szoboszlai and the team is unfortunate Eliott is injured. These players are expected to play far too much football now, too many games during the season and the international tournaments in the summer as well. For any player, and definately a player like Szoboszlai, who puts in far  more running than your average PL player, this means rest through rotation will be key to perform.

Not a comment on his game yesterday this, but a general one.

Slot will have a huge challenge this season. To implement his ideas in the team you’d like stability and not too much chopping and changing. To maintain freshness, fitness and avoid injuries you need to spread the playing time on the whole squad. A squad that is probably at least a midfielder and a CB short of ideal.
