Alexis Mac Allister

He was in the first team when he was like 18, though. And that was for a club and manager that was expecting to win every season. He has already "made it", though careers can get derailed at any time.

I get that he has physical limitations, but the way people harp on them in his case is a little bizarre/disproportionate.

Same with Mac Allister and his pace. Really any "slow" player nowadays. It's really not that big of a deal, unless you have a very basketball type style and your players have to cover lots of space every game. Modern footballers definitely need loads of stamina, but the pace thing, especially for anyone playing midfield or central striker, is pretty overstated.

So much nonsense here. You don't need pace in midfield?

Yeah, Salah's goals don't count because they're pace goals and the brilliant slow midfielders don't count because they're Guardiola midfielders.

Guardiola is a one off, nobody could control a game like his Barcelona side. They could keep the ball for days if they wanted. I don't know any other manager or side who could do that so most sides not being able to have 75% possession will need some pace, somewhere

Oh, wait, you're actually trying to make a serious point and you're not having a massive seizure? Cool, man.

Yeah, you're so, so right, mate. Busquets, Rodri, Xabi, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, Kroos. They had so much pace. So, so much pace.

Just so we're clear, I agree with you on pace not being the be all and end all, but then I remember your preoccupation with the importance of height. Would you say height is a more important factor than speed?

In relation to a lone 6, which is what I was talking about, yes. The quick and mobile defensive midfielders like Kante for example, are wasted as lone 6s because you want to use their ability to get around. Most of the best lone 6s have a height and aerial presence. Busquets, Casemiro, Rodri, Fabinho.
