We brought forward Diaz and Gakpo, we knew they were replacing Sadio and Bobby. We will know who is replacing Matip, if he's gettable in January we will do it, we will wait otherwise.

All depends on what "not a short one" means. 6 weeks is not a short one but not long enough to sign a replacement.

I reckon Quansah will be the one to replace Matip in the squad. He's looked great so far, but it's unfortunately early to be making that call and it doesn't stop Gomez and konate being unreliable with availability.

Nor do I but would rather we signed a RB and played Trent in CM

If we signed a RB, he'd play the hybrid role anyway. This is what we're doing now. There's this idea we're doing it for Trent. I don't think that's the case, I think we're doing it because that's the direction of travel for all the top coaches at the moment. So if Trent becomes our 6 or an 8, whoever replaces him will still be expected to come infield when we have the ball and we'll still have a big gap at right back.

Agree with that 100%

When Gomez plays there he does/tries the same way. But he is far more switched on to get back into position when we lose the ball. He doesn't stroll back like its a chore. The difference in Trents willingness to track back in the City game when I thought he was generally very good and games like yesterday so it's purely if he can be bothered. Same as him playing fullback, he showed when he broke into the squad that while he wasn't the best defender he was competent enough and then he went completely backwards

The trouble is, Gomez is not a good passer of the football. He's moderate, so while he may add more defensive solidity, I don't think he brings anywhere near enough quality to play the RB hybrid role on a permanent basis. Good luck to the lad and he's giving it a go, but if we're to move Trent, klopp will want someone else who can play in that position with foot attacking attributes. And then we might see lots of the problems people perceive with Trent doing it.

And it's pretty unlikely we'll find someone with those attacking talents, who can defend on the cheap. So I don't quite get the rush for it all. I've no issue if we bring someone in like that and move Trent, but I've no doubt if we buy a right back it's to bring attacking talent to the hybrid role and not to block up the space like Gomez does.

Makes you wonder if the plan was for Caicedo to play there and Trent get moved further forward. Agree though Gomez isn't the answer.

Well I think the day we signed mac allister, the plan was Trent playing as he does now and finished last season, alongside fabinho and/or Henderson and macca in front of them. Clearly the Saudis changed all that and we decided to make do with macca.

I personally don't see us changing path at this point with trent - unless a real one off talent who could be hybrid and centre back is suddenly available. Then maybe there's a decision to be made. But honestly, I don't think klopp sees Trent's position in the team as the problem many fans do.

Agree with you there, as Gomez does the inverted thing when he's nominally at RB and Tsimikas did it in one of the cup games....... which doesn't entirely make sense to me as Gomez has a very different skill set to Trent. Still, what do I know - we'd still be unbeaten this season if it wasn't for a dodgy decision at Toulouse and Spursgate.

I think to get the best from Trent he needs to be CM . I no longer think it’s fanciful to say he could take on the Gerrard role. His range of passes is phenomenal

Akanji has a very different skillset to Stones also, but Guardiola plays him in the hybrid role for City when Stones is unavailable. Partey played the role for Arsenal earlier in the season. Postecoglu, Klopp, Guardiola and Arteta will use one of the back 4 in midfield when they play 433 for most games.

I think if Trent moves to midfield, it will be with another DM in a 442. He wont play in the 6 on his own very often, in my opinion.

A little like Gerrard, Trent can probably do what he wants in any position. But it's not about what gets the best out of Trent, it's what makes the best team. If Trent is in one of those midfield areas, it means we have a quality drop off at right back. At the moment we are getting the best of both worlds. I don't see that changing unless we bring an exceptional talent to play the hybrid role. We've not been linked with anyone and I don't believe klopp is even thinking about it.

I agree it’s unlikely we’ll bring anyone in to cover RB in next window. I’m sure Klopp has it on his radar though
