Good city to drink in and the food is really good. Try Bairro Alto, lots of bars round there and decent places to eat, especially if you like steak.

There's a decent place to eat next to the explorers monument on the front and seating outside to have a few drinks next to the sea. You'll have to get a taxi down there from Cais Do sodre Metro station which also has a few decent bars round it. There's an LFC bar underneath the road bridge before the big roundabout there.

A good way to see the city is in one of those motorised tuk tuks which were about €30.

A decent place to visit is Parc De Nacoes. The metro station is Oriente which is a work of art in itself. There is a cable car ride on the waterfront and a large shopping centre with tons of places to eat. There's a few bars down the front. One of which is owned by John Malkovich. Weirdly called "John Malkovich's bar"

If you fancy a day out at the beach you can get the train from Cais Do Sodre to Estoril. There's a big casino where On her Majesty's Secret Service was filmed and lots of bars and places to eat kn the seafront. Cascais is supposed to be nice but I never went there.

Are you planning on going to any games?. Benfica tickets are fairly cheap and easy to buy straight from the club shop. Also Belenenses stadium is near the front and the tickets are dirt cheap. When I went you could drink your beer back at your seat rather than in the concourse.

Benfica has its own metro station (Colegio Militar/Luz) and Sporting has Alvalade metro station next to it.

I went in May 2013 with her and her parents. I think we were unlucky with the restaurants as none of the places we went to were particularly great, save for this little tapas place in Baixa (da Prata 52). Her dad bought cod roe from a fishmonger and fried it up in the apartment, and it was the worst thing I've ever smelled. There was a really cool monastery just along the street from where we were staying, half the Portuguese royal family are buried there but the place was deserted, which was bizarre. I enjoyed the oceanarium, the cathedral and the castle. We stayed in Cascais for a bit too, which is more obviously resorty but still very nice.

It's a big place and for a capital city is pretty picturesque (unlike, say, Athens and Paris, which are largely shitholes) and wherever you go and whatever you do, I don't think you can go far wrong, if that makes sense? But I really like to just explore a bit.

Thanks to everyone who has posted in here so far.

We have tickets sorted for a Sporting Lisbon game, got them for €20 on their website.

There are some cable cars and a nice aquarium which I enjoyed. I also liked that there are small bars selling Cherry liquer on every other corner for a euro.

Absolutely stunned that no one has made a 'hilarious' reference to the Lisbon establishment in Liverpool.

Timeout market is an incredible spot for food and drink, Thanks for that recommendation.

I'd be lying though if I said I lived off anything else other than custard tarts all weekend.

You mean Portuguese Tarts!!!!!

It's where Mahoney told us where the party was.
