I've no issue with Philips playing per say,but that's a huge call. If gomez wasnt right, why was he in the squads over philips the last 2 games,plus Phillips only for 45 mins in preseason whereas gomez got way more time.

Joe Gomez had been carrying a knock so only deemed fit enough for bench duty tonight so Nat Phillips makes his first PL start since May 2021 in absence of the injured Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.

Keita and Tsimikas return to the squad. Firmino absent as a precaution. #LFC

If he's picked up a minor knock and isn't fully fit then you'd rather not risk him today (and worsen the injury), hope you don't have to call on him as a sub, and give him a full 7 days to come back for the Utd game.

We essentially won the league in February a couple of years ago with Gomez and VVD playing together.

Yeah I seem to remember them causing problems last season with well timed runs, not sure about roughing us up. How many of the runs were offside though I cannot remember.
