ETA.  Is it just me or has ETH gone very grey in the beard since he started there?

He's a tedious cunt.

I found him a decent analyst in recent years and pretty complimentary to us. His complete silence on what happened in Paris was fucking unforgivable though, particularly given the Labour man of the people image he’s so carefully curated in recent times, and his and Jamie Carragher’s yapping around the European Super League.

Rabiot and Fred are actually so similar. Sort of auxiliary water carriers that "do a job". Both left footed. Very, very bizarre choice from them. He will add nothing much different. And he brings trouble on top of that.

I don't actually mind Rabiot as a player, and I think he'd a big upgrade on Fred if he was given the no. 8-role in a 4-3-3. He's pretty good at timing his runs and has the ability to glide past players with the ball (much more so than Fred). Having him sit in a 2-man midfield seems pretty dumb though. Disclaimer: I haven't really seen him play much since his PSG days. If he's regressed as a player in addition to the off-the-field stuff that seems to follow him, well good luck.

Fred when he plays with Brazil is used as the 3rd man in midfield to cover for Neymar or other attackers. He's basically just there because he's got an engine and can add balance. Rabiot is the same. Deschamps uses him as the extra man in midfield that provides the security he is after. Genuinely, they do the exact same thing. Rabiot might have a bit more quality but not by much.

Yeah, he's certainly not the flashy all-purpose midfielder they crave. I just think he's got some qualities that fit well in when playing a 3-man midfield. I think he could play the "Wijnaldum" role for us quite well for example, if he had Thiago and Fabinho in there with him. He seems like a pretty disciplined player on the field, and someone that could execute tactical ideas pretty well.

Agreed, but they didn't need that. Arguably all they have in midfield at the moment are all purpose masters of none with limited quality. If they had a number 6 and put him behind Rabiot or Fred and Fernandes/Eriksen in a midfield 3, that would make sense. But Fred and Rabiot together are redundant. McTominay with either of those two, is redundant. Fred and McTominay are a horrendous pair and Rabiot is more of the same. Basically, if you already have Fred, I don't see the point in Rabiot. And also, he's a twat.

Yeah, I'm completely on board with your assessment. They are so srewed it's unreal. I actually thought they should have held on to Matic and played him at the base of a 3-man midfield. He was the only specialist midfielder worth his salt there, and even if he's way past his prime, would have added a bit of stability and cohesion to their play. He wouldn't have been able to play the cup games, but I'm sure he could have played the majority of their league games until they had gotten hold of a decent replacement.

It's just the same bad experiment over and over, and personally I don't see either Rabiot or de Jong changing much either. They'll still give up huge gaps as long as they play with Martial (or even worse, Ronaldo) up top, and Fernandes (and Eriksen) behind them.

It's glorious isn't it?
