Darwin Nunez - Thoughts?

Diaz is showing his class - his form took a brief downturn a few months after his arrival. With the events in his life at the time that is understandable.

 

Does anyone think he is underpaid?

I’m sure his injury and the issue with his parents haven’t helped him. 
 

I think in terms of performances, everybody has always been pretty happy with Diaz, however, not all his good play was rewarded with the goal or assist it should have done. Various reasons for that, he also needs to cop some of the blame for that. 
 

Man City at Anfield last season  was peak Diaz. A really, really good display. Aggressive in all the right ways, took the game to Man City, probably MOTM…. Missed 2 really good chances to put us 2-1 up, he didn’t hit the target for 1st chance and didn’t get a shot away for the 2nd. It’s an easy comparison to make, I’d bet my mortgage Mane would have at least one of those. 
 

I sincerely hope this additional clinical edge he’s found is the sign of things to come.

I’d prefer it at times (I still think we need somebody else in midfield), we shouldn’t disregard what we already have. They are all clearly very good footballers and seemingly have great attitudes - Mark Kennedy, Bruno Cheyrou, Eric Meijer, El Hadj Diouf etc are nowhere the quality or attitude (or both) of Nunez, Diaz and Gakpo. 

 

Diaz is on a great run now, it can’t be a hot streak. This needs to be his standard. Mane would chip in with approaching 20 league goals a season, if Diaz didn’t hit those numbers now, I think it would feel a bit disappointing. 
 

I’m not as taken on Nunez or Gakpo yet. I’d argue have just had their best performances in a red shirt in the last week.

 

Like all of Slot’s work so far, signs across the board are promising. This is only the start, still plenty of time for it to go wrong. Everybody needs to keep this up.

As we're seeing with the forward line, it looks in good shape and that's partly because we've bought. In midfield and defence, we've a shortage of numbers. We can't put everything right with a bit of coaching, especially as our previous coach was regarded as world class.
