Surround Sound/Vertical Soundbar

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: I’m shit at tech.

I want to sort out some kind of surround sound but I haven’t got a scooby. I don’t have room on the TV unit for a soundbar to sit on. Are the ‘two tower’ style speakers that stand either side of the TV a worthwhile investment? Will it improve my living room?

Ideally I’d have only one wireless tower alongside/just behind the sofa. Living room is set up with the sofa out in the open with a small gap one side between that and the wall. Again the question is would just that one speaker behind the sofa improve my living room viewing experience? Or would having only the one speaker behind one end of the couch be stupid?

Ta in advance and a warning for anyone that replies, expect loads of stupid questions.

Umm not 100% on this but tbh I am not sure how 1 speaker will help you out. If it were me I would prob buy a pair of book shelf speakers. Sit them either side if tv or either side of room, you will have some sound separation and stereo output. As the name implys they are made to fit on bookshelf and come in various styles and budgets. A half decent pair will undoubtedly help your experience, then later on if it was me I would be looking at a sub, if I had the room.

Oh and obviously you have to make sure they can connect direct to TV, optical or audio jack.

Apparently IKEA bookshelf speakers are made alongside sonos stuff and pair with them, meant to be decent but you'd need to research them first. In my spare room I've put a sonos beam and two sones ones as rear speakers, really good sound. I'm waiting for the rumoured sonos sub mini as the full sub is overkill. My missus doesn't appreciate it, women are shite sometimes.

What I’m saying will probably make more sense if I post up pictures of my living room, but it’s my lad’s birthday today and the place looks a right state with boxes and stuff everywhere.

Maybe tomorrow.

I’m not buying these ones below because they’re £500…

… but will having towers like that either side of the TV unit, but with no soundbar and nothing behind the sofa really, really improve my TV watching experience? Is it a worthwhile investment?

Nah, you'd need the central speaker too. Those won't properly replicate the spoken part movie soundtracks.
