That set up was very much a one off though. It wasn't our framework for the season. He played a similar formation in an Anfield derby with Shaq wide and div as the 9 iirc too - with maybe mane left and I can't remember the 10. It's something he's done when short of players and has a need to rotate. But that doesn't mean he sees it as a season long plan. It's just a curve ball he's thrown in occasionally. If we start more than 3 matches next season in anything other than a 433, I'll let you sign bamford next summer.

We gave it a good go that season especially in the first half, but I think Klopp lost faith in Shaq pretty quickly. I’d like to see it revisited.

It’s their MO. We’ve seen them do exactly that with the players. They love their wage structure.

You could argue it's not their MO.

They havent agreed terms with 3 players in their late 20's. Maybe they don't see that they represent the long term value to them to justify it now.

Edwards could have been here for 10 more years. They may have felt that was worth it.

For years we were told FSG were against signing OLDER players for big fees, big wages and long contracts.

So you’re saying you give Klopp more credit than Barry…

Now despite anyones views on Barry’s opinion of the owners, he’s always heaped praise on Klopp and said the owners won’t look so good once he’s gone.

You think Klopp has played the wrong formation for more than 2 years.

But you give Klopp more credit than Barry.

Yeah I think he’s much more tactically flexible than Barry thinks he is, and not as wedded to 4-3-3, I also gave examples.

They don’t bring in younger players outside of their wage structure either HBenn. The reason we stopped pursuing Sancho we’re told.

The issue with giving older players long expensive contracts is rarely the first two years of a deal, it's usually the last three.

The issue with giving young players massive deals is they'll eclipse what established stars are earning without having the body of work to back that up and, as you often see, the hunger then dissipates.

Would you have given Sancho 350k a week?

I think our system is pretty good as it stands.

I wasn’t giving a value judgement, and I’m ambivalent on this issue. Though if pressed I’d prefer it if we extend Salah.

I'm genuinely not arsed if it's revitalised or not. I just don't think it is something klopp wants to do and I don't see him trying to shoehorn 8 midfielders into 2 positions. Regardless, if klopp keeps playing winning and entertaining football like he has for most of the 7 years he's been here, then I'm ok with that even if we play 7-1-1-1

I think if you want a real look into next season, I think we've been given it already. I think Diaz surprised them by settling so quickly. And I think part of mane's move to playing a more regular 9 position than certainly firmino had and I would say Jota too, is a glimpse into what Nunez will bring to this side..like Mane, he will have some strengths coming off the left, but he will be a real focal point of the attack. It will be phase 2 (last season phase 1) of phasing Salah out of our attacks focal point. I think we will see more of Diaz drifting inside and Nunez going the opposite way to make space for him.  And hopefully Diaz will start getting his shots half a yard inside the post instead of outside. But I think we'll do all of this with 3 midfielders behind.

He won't be wedded to a formation because formations aren't that important and players move around during games. But it's about the players and getting the best out of them. Klopp wasn't a false 9 guy but he had Firmino, so he became one, and put goal scoring wide players around him.

The problem with going 4-2-3-1 with a real #10, is we have no great #10's, so it's not like there's much point. It would be a change for the sake of change unless Carvalho or Firmino are really, really good there.

The hit ratio on our signings, down to Edwards and Klopp, will have been huge for the pay structure.

Good players get signed on good wages and play brilliantly. You cant argue with that or use it as leverage to get yourself a payrise.

Keita probably the only fly in the ointment that a player might look across the dressing room and start getting dissillusioned but its clearly well managed and the transfer "misses" have been so few.

Our squad must be an agents nightmare as its a big risk to start bigging up his man as Top Billing.

*Unless your Mo's agent of course

Chamberlain too.

Yeah, but the lack of great 10s is where Madison comes in!

It’s a really minor point that you’re trying to pull me up on and I don’t think @Barrington Womble or anyone else really cares that much. Shall we move on?

There’s nothing to disagree on other than the last sentence, as I think we could do with another source of goals, and Thiago and Fabinho on their own are good enough to dominate the midfield to accommodate for a number 10.

What if I say let’s bring Paqueta in.

It depends what the process is. Is it to have a formation in mind and sign players based on that, or sign players with skills you like and then afterwards make a formation around them?

You've always wanted the former and I just don’t think that's how Klopp has operated here. That's why you like the natural position thing. You want players that play set positions.

Klopp went 4-2-3-1 when he started which was his favourite formation, then in his first full season, immediately changed it based on the players he had.

I like Paqueta but Klopp wouldn't buy him or Maddison because he wants to play them in a #10 role. He'd buy a player if he likes the player, and then he'd figure out where to put him.

Three adaptable players for both midfield and attack is the most flexible system. It allows Klopp to rotate and never really miss a beat. A proper number 10 goes against that, but then again, the same arguments were made for us not bringing in a specialist DM like Fabinho prior to his signing.

I'm not sure the argument is about the position, but about the skillset of the player. There's nothing wrong with a "proper number 10" if they have the workrate. Likewise, there's nothing wrong with a proper 9 if they have technique and workrate and a complete set of skills.

I dont know if they do that here but in the NFL they may forward load a contract, ie £100m over 4 years would be 40/30/20/10 instead of a flat 25 per year, so if you have an older player you should theoretically have your moneys worth early in the contract then a bit more to play with later on. Still the same expense I guess but an older player might be easier to move on if they arent at the highest salary in the contract period.
