Fed and watered after the game now. Well, 3-0 and you shouldnt complain but, I came away from that game thinking we were pretty toothless up front and yet again, neither Matip nor Virgil creating any goal threat.

The game was very tense up until Fabinho opened the scoring in front of me. A ball into the box, I think from a corner and Virgil mistimes his header, gets a glancing blow which see the ball travelling in Fab's direction. Thankfully, Fab is more deadly on attacking headers than Virgil is to open the scoring.

But even before that, Joel had a great opportunity to head us into the lead from a similar position to that from where Fab scored but, put it wide! Talk about 50p shaped heads. Apart from being big players on corners in the oppos box, why cant our two 'big men' head the ball  on target and be more of a goal threat at corners? It really baffles me. Maybe we need a corner coach to improve things?

Brentford surprised me in that they didnt try the same tactics on us as they did so successfully at their place. Today, they seemed to want to try and play the ball through us. Not that Im complaining but it seemed to blunt their attacks, which, in the main were sniffed out quite easily.

The 2nd goal was a long time coming. Ox had taken a wild swing at a cross that ended up 50 foot over the ball when a square ball to Bobby or Jota seemed the one to play. But he atoned for that error with a nice header at the near post across the keeper to make it 2. That settled a lot of nerves in the ground because at 1-0, you're always susceptible to an error at the back or a quick break.

Unfortunately, Ox later went down in the box and Im not certain if he turned his ankle or his knee just gave way. The ref saw no foul either. Hopefully he's fit for Thursday now after he hobbled straight down the tunnel.

I cant remember if it was before or after Ox scored but Jota was unlucky to see a good shot come back off the post. Other than that, he didnt seem to have much luck during the game.

I was convinced the 3rd goal was going to go to VAR because it was so comical. Brentford messed up a goal kick and I wasnt sure if Bobby or Taki were onside when they played the old 'one two.'

Great work by Taki saw him close down the defender on the short goal kick. The defender played it back to the keeper who instead of clearing his lines, elected to play the ball forwards only for Bobby to intercept the play then have time to play a one two with Taki who scored. Shame he couldnt do that last Thursday. Harrumph! 3-0 and game over and everyone could relax.

Gordon had a great chance to add a fourth but one on one with the keeper, he put it straight at him. Jones was industrious but couldnt really stamp his authority on the game.

All in all, a weird game. We never looked in any danger except for a brief period in the first half when Fabinho had a couple of brain farts in almost as many seconds, looked pretty toothless for large parts yet scored 3 and maybe should have added another 2.

We need Div to be fit for Thursday because Bobby and Jota didnt really create much. Plus, I fear the worst and that arsenal will spawn it if we are as toothless again. There's also the Palace away game but, I really shouldnt get ahead of myself!

MoTM is Hendo for me. Played some great balls and never stopped probing and running.

Has there ever been a shorter league game thread than this?

Personally I just couldn’t be arsed today. Seems like many others felt the same way.
It’s been so deflating recently.

But we could knock Arsenal out on Thursday, hopefully beat Palace, then we have the 3 AFCON players back and a potentially morale boosting cup final. Keep applying the pressure on those cunts at the top and look forward to some CL bossing.

Get Firmino off ffs.  The more you play him the more interested clubs realize how shit he is.

Unfortunately it takes half a football brain to see Firmino's impact on our attacking play. That rules out half of our posters and half the Brexit LMA brigade. The good thing about that is that Firmino will continue to be a key player for us and Klopp. He's had a rough spell for a while, but is still our only other player than Salah able to operate in tight spaces/between the lines. Covid and injuries might have taken some of his edge off, but there are clear signs his touch is back, and I fully expect him to start alongside Mane and Salah once we're facing the top sides in Europe and PL.

Such a key player he wouldn't be getting a game today were it not for the Afcon.

He gets the Covid excuse as well that's how much of a simp you are.  He was garbage before covid and has only continued that form during covid.  He'd probably do well in Spain hopefully Barcelona make that happen.

  1. He surely would, as when Jota's not scoring, his not bringing Salah/Mane into play becomes a problem. Bobby is much better in that aspect of the role, if you didn't have your head buried in a spreadsheet today you would probably be able to spot this.. If you only focus on their individual scoring stats there's not really an argument. I actually think Jota played in his best position today (for us as a team), and I think him and Mane will take turns alternating on the LW while Salah and Firmino are the mainstays of our side when the CL games start again.
  2. He really wasn't, and he really hasn't, but you just keep banging that drum, as it seems you get more enjoyment from that than us winning.

1.  No he wouldn't.

2.  He was and continues to be.

Jota is much more effective at bringing others into the play than Firmino these days.  It’s like your clinging on to something someone’s said a few years ago and not looking at the evidence right in front of your eyes.  A lost cause.

By the way, delightful to see that ridiculous but fashionable conceit of having two defenders standing awkwardly inside the area for a goal kick punished with a goal. It hardly ever achieves anything other than to make the defenders look utterly bewildered and creates a nice gap for the opposition to attack. Just like the 'sneak the ball outside the corner arc' routine, everyone copies such stuff unthinkingly no matter how little the empirical benefits and it's just nice to see something like that end in chaos. Hopefully Arteta's dogged devotion to it will meet the same fate later this week.

Looks like some of the cunts haven't updated their attitudes since last time they played a league game here.
